Wedding dress already to small?!?!

Emma, on August 6, 2020 at 10:29 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 21
So my wedding is October 3rd. The bridal shop I got my dress from told me to start alterations beginning of July so I did. My dress was ready July 24th. I just tried it on again on Monday and I feel like it’s a little to snug about my ribs but it fit perfectly on the 24th! When I tried it on at home I didn’t put on the shape wear because I can’t get the dress on by myself with it. I don’t know what to do. I DO NOT want to start a diet ( recovering from disorder eating) Part of me feels like I should really start focusing on working out again. Ignore the diet, do my best to work out, and if on September 1st it still feels to snug take it and see if she can let it out a little bit? It will cost like $100 to let it out! I’ve already spent $300 on alterations. Part of me is thinking that maybe because I didn’t have my shape wear on is why it left weird. Plus I tried it on at the end of the day so maybe I was just bloated? I’m trying to think logically. What should I do?!?

I would recommend trying the dress on again with the shape wear and anything else you plan to wear the day of your wedding. Sometimes, things fit differently based on what you're wearing.

If it's still too tight in September with the shape wear on, I would suggest letting it out a little bit at that time. But definitely try it on with the same things you plan to wear on your wedding day, because it could make a difference.

Take a deep breath. If you tried it on with shape wear on the 24th and it fit, then chances are the reason it felt snug when you tried it on again Monday is because you didn’t have the shape wear on.
    Don’t stress yourself out. ❤️

I think I will try it on again today with my shape wear and see how it feels!

First, try it on the way you would on your wedding day. Shapewear, whatever.

For me personally, fortunately, I had my alterations done while I was "bloated" - thank goodness that's about an inch of emergency space. On your wedding day, avoid the following from being bloated: carbs and gluten if possible - for me this are all agents that cause bloating.

I wouldn't stress too much otherwise.

My dress was altered while I was on my period so I was a little bloated. I’m really hoping it is just the shape wear. But I mean adding a little back/core exercise won’t hurt anything so I think that’s what I’m going to try and do

It won't hurt, but just be careful. I read recently from one of our forums of a woman who went hard core to lose weight during covid, She was successful I think (if I remember right) lost 20 - 30lbs but gained so much muscle that her dress really did become too small.

Reduce your calorie intake for a few days keep it at 1200 - 1500, reduce your sugar, no soda, reduce carbs and you'll be fine. I promise.

I’m trying not to diet because of past disordered eating. 1200 calories is what a toddler should consume, not an adult.

I went to my second fitting when I was pms-ing, and I freaked out because my dress was tight. It zipped, but it felt very snug and not right. They told me not to worry, to come back next week and try it on. When I did, it felt perfect again. I had just been bloated. It made me nervous on wedding day a week later, but it fit perfectly then, too. I wore my shape wear every time. It's amazing how much (yet subtly) hormones can do to change our shape. Wait a week, cut out excessive salt, drink plenty of water. I think those two tweaks could make you feel a lot better, and, hopefully, not trigger you. Be strong! I'm rooting for you! Smiley heart

Thank you for the encouragement. Both my appointments were scheduled while I was pms too. Not that I’m not it stresses me out even more that the dress feels to tight. Someone else recommended I put it on for about 10 minutes a day a few times a week and it will help to slowly stretch it out. I think doing that on top of doing a “core” challenge, increasing cardio, and upping my water intake I’ll be good for October 3rd!

I wouldn't stress if it just felt a little snug. Shape wear will absolutely make a difference (it will hold you in and tighten you up, as well as add a more slippery surface for the dress to slide over) plus bloating is just a thing. My waist can fluctuate by a couple inches if I eat really salty food, have my period, etc and it can vary in a really short time too.

I lost a little weight after getting my dress and it was about 1-2 inches loose, so I considered having it taken in slightly. Then I wanted to show it to some friends and tried it on after going to dinner with them. Well previously I had only ever tried it on in the morning after a light breakfast, and having a drink, dinner, some dessert made all the difference. I put it on and it fit me perfectly because I had a full stomach. So I opted to leave it as is so I could enjoy the meal on our wedding day (then Covid came and I couldn't take it for alterations anyway).

So my point is, don't stress until you are having fit issues in a situation that actually replicates your wedding. Trying it on without shape wear isn't going to give you an accurate perception of how it will fit on your wedding day. If it fit perfectly 2 weeks ago it can absolutely fit perfectly again without needing alterations.

My apologies on suggestion my nutritionist has me on 1200 currently.

    I'd seek medical guidance then.

It’s okay! I totally understand you were just trying to be helpful! Ready my comment back it seemed a little snappy, I apologize for that. I worked with a nutritious for my disordered eating. Some people can function on a 1200 calorie diet (mostly only with a drs help) but most can not.

Thank you so much! That definitely helps me understand the reason why it might not fit as good now

Putting it on is a great idea. Maybe sit for a few minutes too. You can always get it steamed/pressed if you wrinkle it at all. And the shape wear will make a huge difference. That's why they tell you to being all of that with you to your appointments. I don't think I could've zipped if I didn't have my spanx 😂

Squats will also be a huge bang for your buck, excersize-wise. Deadbugs (look em up) push ups, and Squats. My brother is a personal trainer. This is what he gave me to do. Your ONLY goal is to do 1 more rep tomorrow than you did today. Then you hit your goal every day 🙂

Oh I like that “one do one more today than what you did yesterday”! I could totally do that!

You'll probably be fine once you put the Spanx on. And Julie's recommendation about only doing one more rep than you did yesterday is a great idea! Also, is it healthy for you to know your weight? I have a suggestion but I don't want to cause any problems if knowing your weight will cause you to fixate on it.

Girl!!! Former eating disorder sufferer here too, and I totally get it. Don’t diet, just get more active. Doesn’t have to be structured work outs. Walks around the neighborhood, pulling weeds, crafting....it helps.
