Wedding Cancellation Insurance?

Kristen, on October 26, 2020 at 10:49 AM Posted in Planning 0 7
Has anyone used wedding cancellation insurance before? I am wanting to put a down deposit on a wedding venue, but nervous my church might not be available then. I am waiting to solidify it with the church but they've been dragging their heals since it is a new priest. Do you recommend putting the deposit down and buying insurance if the date has to change or just wait until I can solidify with the church and risk losing the venue? thank you!

If you explain the situation to the wedding venue, are they willing to put a soft hold on your date until you're able to ensure that the church is secured for the ceremony? Or, before putting a deposit down, ask the venue if they'd be willing to let you switch dates at no cost if you book the venue now and later find out that your church isn't available that date. Either way, I'd talk with the venue and make sure they're aware of the situation.

I'd double check the details of the insurance, but based on what you're stating, you may need to use it if the church does not confirm your dates. I think with insurance, you need to already have the contracts in place (I'm not 100% sure, but that's the way I understood it).

    Thank you, Lisa!

I explained it to them, but unfortunately, they do not have any wiggle room and wouldn't be able to let me switch unless it was COVID related. I will ask about a soft hold again and hope for the best!

Thank you, Margaret! I want to definitely solidify the contracts and get the insurance if there is no other way. I am only tripped up by the clause "Reimbursement of non-refundable deposits if you cancel or postpone for a covered reason."

I am not sure what their covered reasons are and I have been calling, but so far no response.

    I appreciate your insight!

Read the fineprint, note Covid is not covered

Insurers do everything in their power to avoid paying you out and there are generally quite a few requirements to actually succeed in making a claim. With almost every insurance policy I have heard of, you need to have the insurance in place before any events occur which you claim for. Therefore, if you pay the deposit before getting insurance, chances are your insurer will not be of any assistance in the event something happens with the church.

Honestly you’re better off asking to put in some protections in the contracts with your vendors than spending extra money on insurance.
