Wedding cake thoughts...

Bryanna, on November 12, 2021 at 11:32 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 9

So going in to planning our wedding, I knew I wanted the cake to be on my MUSTS list. I wanted the cake to be the main part of the dessert. So we decided on a baker which honestly blew our minds with her flavors. She is worth every penny she charges. However, after getting our quote back I am worried we are going over budget too much. She requires also a 50% deposit which took me by surprise only because bakeries before this would only charge $100 to hold them. Due to guest count changing and etc.. So The quote she gave me is only for who is invited and not on who is actually coming yet. Which is a very big cake and I do feel like we will get less people. So its hard to half to put half down now when the guests count will change. Now my question is.. Do I get more practical and just do a smaller cake with other desserts? Will people be sad or offended if they don't get to try a piece? I am lostSmiley sad Her cake is truly AMAZING! However, half is a lot right now but I am scared she will book up.

If this cake is one of your must haves, and you were blown away by her flavors, then I would definitely go ahead and book her; because you are correct, she will probably fill up if you wait too long. Our baker also charged 50% for the deposit, but if we end up needing to order a smaller cake, we will just pay the difference between that deposit and the final total. Is your baker willing to do something like that? If not, and you end up with too much cake, can always purchase those cheap cake slice to go boxes and send slices home with your guests.

You should absolutely have enough for everyone to have a slice. Even if you have less guests than you're inviting, half will likely still not cover the entire cost, unless half your guest list doesn't show up and as far as I know you finalize details once you get a final head count and could request it smaller than the preliminary quote. Half is pretty common among the bakers I know because they have to cover the costs to make it.

Honestly it doesn't sound like you'd be happy without a full cake. so your options would be go with this baker and try to negotiate with her OR find another baker who CAN do the same thing or a different baker that's good enough for your tastes.

I would ask her what her policy is in the event that your cake is way too large for your guest count. There is a chance she may be able to make it smaller if your guest count is significantly different.

Aim for enough cake for 80% of your guest count total. Some persons may decline cake. The approximation would be close enough to alter slice size as appropriate. Best wishes.

Since the cake is a high priority and you admire her work, I think you should see if there’s some leeway in your budget for it.

That’s such a personal question that only you and fiancé can answer. Some people love and prioritize cake and others see it as an obligation to make others happy and don’t see how anyone can eat it.

Do you want other desserts instead? Always prepare for 100% attendance. People largely fall into one of 2 categories: must have cake at a wedding and don’t want alternatives and people who don’t want cake period. Since you are in the first group, make sure there is enough cake for everyone. The ones who don’t touch it will pass theirs on to the others seeking seconds so it will get eaten. Find out what the inexpensive dessert options are from your caterer that are not cake related (don’t serve cupcakes because that is still cake) but have enough of those cookies, pies etc for 1/3 of your guests.
