Wedding Cake Serving- Why so small?!

ChelsM, on April 27, 2015 at 7:05 PM Posted in Planning 0 13

Maybe I'm just a piggy (I love me some good cake, ok? Sue me) but I was at a wedding a couple of weeks ago and the slice of cake was wafer thin. So tiny. Also dry, but that's beside the point. Is that a normal thing? Because I want my wedding cake servings to be actual. Frickin. Cake. Not tiny little lunch meat-width bits, actual cake. I bet that would cost more though, huh? I just don't understand why it's $5 a serving and TINY. Someone back me up...

Uh, I would be upset, too. I love food, especially cake! Most weddings that I've been to, we were served at least an inch thick (round cakes) or a good couple of square inches. Were there more people than cake at that wedding? How big was that thing?

I think this may have been just that wedding. I have been to a few weddings this year and the slices were plenty.

Most weddings I've been to were average/normal size! Probably the bride just cheaped out!

Lol I am so the same way. This is the reason I am making sure to have enough cupcakes for guests to have two each ha ha. Mmmmm cake.

OK thank goodness. My FH seemed to think that was normal and I was all hellll naw, gimme some cake! The cake itself was sizeable, 3 tiers for about 80 people I think. It may have been borderline. Then again, it wasn't very good so not worth the calories for a normal slice. Glad this isn't the norm!

That is my biggest fear for my wedding! I don't want to serve skimpy cake slices. I know not everybody loves cake the way I do but I swear, I would rather have too much and eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner the next day than to have to serve wafer thin slices. It's my Polish side. More food is always better than not enough.

I agree with you! For me, an appropriate serving size is approximately a half the cake, lol. It could have simply been the person doing the slicing wasn't experienced with slicing up wedding cakes. You can specify to the person doing that for you to give the people some cake!

It depends on how much cake is ordered compared to how many guests. My guests got huge pieces and there was plenty left over, but that's because we had a 3 tier cake for 60 people lol

When FH and I went for our tasting we could not decide on which two flavors to get, (one for each tier). We are only having 40 guests, but we upped the cake to 2 tiers and a sheet cake! for a few reasons.

    1) Because Cake.

    2) we could not pick only two flavors

    3) we wanted enough for everyone to have a proper slice of cake, not the one inch by one inch, two bite sized cake tease...it a TEASE!

    4) I want cake for breakfast the next day

    5) we want our guests to have more than one flavor

    6) because...CAKE!

My brother got married last year and the horrible, tiny, dry, blech cake was....just that, horrible and expensive!!

Every wedding I've been too are fairly thin cake slices. We ordered extra cake and told them that was why to provide nice thick slices. Most people skip cake from being too drunk and a lot gets thrown out so that could be why. Or the bride and groom cheap out on enough cake and cut it close. If you Google wedding cake serving size slices it shows them small.

I ordered lots of cupcakes and cookies so everyone gets there fill - my bakery told me I have enough stuff for about 50 extra people. And I was like, "lady, I love cake, and I will personally eat the leftovers". She approved, since she's a cake lady and obviously loves cake too! The cupcakes we got are big, and the sugar cookies are pretty big too, and then there's the macaroons...and also we have a cutting cake...love, love, love cake!
