Wedding Cake “included”

Nicole, on February 13, 2020 at 11:03 PM Posted in Planning 0 8
So our venue package includes a wedding cake from a bakery they are affiliated with. Our wedding coordinator said it’s included and all we have to do is make an appointment at the bakery and pick out our cake. So we did, we had our tasting. After choosing the flavor and design, at the end they charged us $700 something, and on the receipt it was $200 something for fondant which I honestly didn’t want and $500 something for the flowers we chose as the design for the cake. I know we should’ve spoken up at the time, but the lady who was helping us was an older retired lady, I could tell she previously had a stroke (nurse instincts) and she was really nice that we just went along with it.

I just think it’s misleading for them to say the cake is included when really it’s not. They should’ve been more specific that it was literally the cake itself with frosting that was included. And I also think it’s kinda crazy that fondant and floral icing cost so much when only 2 tiers have flowers on them. Is that reasonable? Has anyone been in a similar situation where their venue said the cake is included? I’m not sure if we were suppose to pay or if it was a mistake. I’ll definitely ask when we see our wedding coordinator again.

Our venue included a cake and before I went to the bakery I confirmed exactly what that meant. For us it was a perfect person amount so it was based on the number of people we had. I would call your venue and get some clarity and then call the bakery and change your order. That’s a lot of money if that’s above what the venue covers. We opted for a fairly simple cake and ended up paying an extra $150 but that wasn’t too bad.

Our venue had a similar set up. When we went to the cake tasting, our consultant told us what was included in our "free" cake and what would be an upcharge. Fondant was an upcharge, but I hate fondant so that was fine by me lol. We used buttercream instead and then had royal icing flowers on the top tier cascading down the sides. It was a 3 tier cake. We didn't pay anything extra for the cake.

Our wedding cake is “included” too. But it was additional for different fillings, designs, etc etc. We asked for different options to be priced out and then after we received our quotes we chose from there.
I would talk to your venue vendor and the bakery, they should have let you know that what you were choosing was going to be an additional charge in advance, but it sounds like you did know in advance. The tasting is plenty of time before the wedding, so you knew then the cake was going to be more expensive. Unfortunately i think that was your chance to say something. If you didn’t want to ask the bakery you should have at least followed up with your venue.
Has the wedding already happened? If not, you should get in contact with everyone now and change your cake to one that is included. Good luck!

Our cake is included but the bakery was up front in what was included and what would be an additional charge. We aren’t big on cake plus get a lot of dessert options included at the venue for guests so we chose a basic cake for the cake cutting. Just give me what’s free lol

Def go back/ call the bakery to change the order and see what is included as free part of your package

So basically you’re paying $700 for the cake to be decorated?! That is ridiculous and I would say something.

I think a lot of places that have cake included are for simple frosted cakes. Mine would have had upcharges for a lot of extra work/materials if I hadn't provided the flowers and ribbons myself.

We have the same deal with our venue. They include a cake. I contacted them with the below photo and they said there would be no extra charge despite how detailed it is. The top layer and bottom layer will be real and the middle will be fake. I have seen the work of the pastry chef and I have no doubt that she can handle this. Perhaps they could do something like that and then serve sheet cake as the wedding cake?! Wedding Cake “included” 1

Exactly what I was thinking. Yeah, I'm definitely going to talk to someone about this.
