Wedding cake from Walmart?

Miranda, on October 30, 2013 at 1:15 PM Posted in Planning 0 48

Hmmm, not sure about that but they are so much cheaper. Anyone used walmart to make their wedding cake? and how did it turn out?

I saw that on a website about their cakes but Safeway also make beautiful Wedding cakes if you have one in your area. I'm looking for an affordable cake as well. Will watch this thread to see if anyone has used them.

I haven't, but I have heard that Price Chopper and Shop Rite make really tasty wedding cakes so I wouldn't be surprised if Walmart does as well.

On a similar note, I've been told by many people to go to Price Chopper for their flowers. Way better price and they do a great job, so I'm definitely checking them out. I think sometimes the cost is higher for smaller places to make their product and they don't have the buying advantages that a lot of the larger chains have (so I've been told), which is why their product might be cheaper.

    Walmart's icing is sooooooo good.

Walmart has specific wedding cakes to choose from and there's no customizing them. I'm not sure if you're responsible for delivery and set-up, but I do know you can't deviate from their design.

We did! It was delicious & plenty of people said so ;]. The only thing is that they don't deliver so you have to arrange ahead of time someone with steady hands that you trust immensely haha. I'd post pics, but I'm on the mobile app :/

I have no experience with this personally but if your looking at cheaper options, maybe consider going to a culinary college in your area and see if a student would be capable of doing this. You'll be helping someone new and they'll likely save you a fortune. I would make sure they can show you at least a couple things they've done just to make sure it's something you would pay for.

I went to a wedding in July with a Walmart Wedding Cake. I've attached a photo of it. I decorate cakes as hobby so I noticed a lot of imperfections:

The dyes in the colors leeched into the white space on the cake. Within a few hours the decoration had bled blue and purple everywhere. The bands varied greatly in thickness, the scrollwork was uneven and the tiers weren't centered.

When people were eating the cake that had coloring on it, their mouth got dyed blackish/blueish.

With that said, they paid like $175 and it tasted good. I think they got what they paid for for sure, I've had horrible tasting cakes that were beautifully decorated in the past and cost $800-$1200.

If I were going with a Walmart Cake, I would go with a white frosted cake and I would have my own cake topper and would either order some edible sugar flowers online or I would order some low cost real flowers like roses and use them to decorate the cake myself (it's really easy).

Actually, you could do it like this too with white scroll work that wouldn't bleed....REAL ribbon that wouldn't bleed or be sloppy, and real flowers. Real low cost to do this.

Walmart doesnt make their own cakes! They are shipped frozen!

I tried to warn myfriend but she insisted to order!

Thy made the cake uneven and it was falling. We had to prop it up. Its was a painnnn

I used to work there and i had tons of people order their wedding cakes from the store i worked at. They werent that much cheaper either, they were always $300-$400. The store i worked at didnt stack them though, they put them in fancy boxes and you had to stack them yourself

    Sarah,

That's the case with most grocery stores (with frozen cakes).

It actually does not affect the quality of the cake. They're actually pretty perfect for decorating.

Poor support would make the cake uneven or inappropriate weight or weight distribution of a decoration would.

Jackie - Good point. I can't attest to whether the horrible centering on the wedding cake I posted is from the store or from the groom who picked it up. It's entirely possible that he was the one who messed that up. That had not occurred to me.

You only get one shot...um, don't leave that to the groom. hehe.

I loathe Wal-Mart in general, but I will try to be objective here. So ignoring that, I think their bakery items are absolutely disgusting. I would not buy a wedding cake there in a million years and if that was my only option, I would rather not have a cake.

I looked at Publix first because I figured the big chain would be the cheapest. Turns out there were not. The local baker I went with did a lot more design elements on the same size cake for a cheaper price than Publix quoted me.

Sarah, you mentioned that Wal-Mart's cakes are shipped to them. Do you know from where? I heard one time that they come from China, but have not been able to confirm or deny.

I know some people that get a cake where only part of it is real for the cutting and then have sheet cakes which are generally lower in cost for when it is passed out to the guest

Haha, Okay some of You Guys crack me up! I'm a walmart employee and no the cakes do not come from china they come from a individual vendor like mostly everything does. And the only thing that's frozen is the actual cake part, We actually have a Cake Decorator that puts the icing, flowers, designs on the cake..

Although are cakes are not that bad I don't care for cake ay all. I'd rather a pie or cheesecake.

Starbuck the cake was just on a flat table. The thing was crooked!!! I wish ihad a pic but we easily decided it was not pic worthy unless we used it as a way to channel our anger from it into dart practice.

As for yoyr question of where they come from it depends on the size! I know its strange but each size is a different supplier. The sheet is from philsbury, the rounds are from a company called best brands

thats what i am told from my friend at the wally world at least!

I laughed out loud at the China comment.

I actually like Walmart for store bought cake taste. It's not that bad for a budget cake. You just have to be realistic with expectations and work within their strengths.

I didnt get a cake there but if you are looking at getting something cheaper a baker suggested to me to get a small 2tier cake for the cutting (& anniversary) and then buy 2 or 3 (depending on # of guests) regular cakes in different flavours and it should be cheaper. Im probably gonna do this.

That's where I'm getting mine! $125 for a 3 layer that serves 134 people.. But you can only have one flavor.. so I'm actually getting a 2 layer chocolate cake ($64- serves 64 people) and a full sheet cake that's white cake ($40- serves 50 people). For me who is on a budget, its a no brainer.. my cousins get expensive cakes all the time and they taste nasty, I love how walmarts cakes taste and I can't imagine my wedding cake will be any different.
