Wedding Cake Dilema

Denise, on December 14, 2018 at 10:07 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 16

So FH and I are in love with the idea of having multiple flavors of cake but I want one big cake, not one with separating tiers either, I want the big one piece 5 tiered cake but each layer to be a different flavor, the problem is that I can't find a logical way to do all of that. So I either give up the one piece cake, give up the multiple flavors or I have to find a way to dismantle the cake easily. What did everyone else do?

We had a 3 tier cake with each tier a different flavor. Think if you did each layer a different flavor it would be a bit much. Just stick to different flavors for each layer. We did the top layer lemon with lemon filling, middle was white cake with strawberry mouse and the bottom was chocolate cake with fudge filling

We’re having a 4 tier cake. Haven’t decided on flavors yet (we have our tasting in January!) but the top and bottom tiers will have the same cake/filling combo and the 2 middle tiers will have the other combo. Then we get a cupcake of each to bring home and freeze for our anniversary Smiley smile

I think you should just do each tier a different flavor.

I think it would be easiest to to a flavor a tier... why are you opposed to the tiers?

But these are tiers, aren't they? You can't tell by the ribbon and fondant but I think they are tiers...

How can you tell the difference?

There us no reason each layer can't be a different flavor with cakes like those. It's really normal. I would suggest limiting it to two flavors, unless you have extra sheet cakes in all the flavors in the back.. If you have a lot of flavors guests are going to assume they can take multiple slices of cake.

    Talk with your baker.

This is what my cake will be like! Different design but same idea. I’m almost 100% sure this is considered a tiered cake? Your baker should easily be able to make this in multiple flavors!

Are you making the cake yourself or is a baker? I think that's a totally reasonable request. If you're making it yourself, I'd assume you just make each layer/flavor in various size cake pans (small to large depending on your preference of the order). You will probably have to put something in between each layer, like a round piece of cardboard maybe, so that the layers don't melt into each other, and since you want it big, it'll probably require dowels to keep it all up. But if you want fondant, you should probably have a baker make it, in which case they'd know how to construct it!

Ah Okay I believe you may be confused between a "Tiered Cake Stand" (has not been in style in quite some time)

and the "Tiered Cake" (also known as a stacked cake)

The ones you are saying you want, are not made as one whole cake. They are made as multiple cakes stacked together often separated by icing or jam.

You absolutely can (and a lot of people do) get each tier a different flavor! The only thing is you may want to consider choosing 1 flavor/color icing for asthetic sake.

These are still considered tiered cakes, they’re just not separated individual and are essentially “one cake”. You can absolutely have this look with different flavors. We are doing that and having almond and chocolate

She is correct. a "tier" is just a fancy word for a layer of the cake. The pillars and glass and such is just a display option (and an outdated one at that). It should not be a problem for a professional baker to do what you are asking.

I planned on having a close family friend who dabbles in baking doing my wedding cake. I just don't have the resources where I'm at to have a professional do it without an outrageous travelling fee.

I think it will be totally fine having a non-professional make it. I just did a quick youtube search and there are plenty of instructional videos for how to make a stacked cake. As long as your family friend has all the proper tools and equipment it should be fine!

Five tiers for a "dabbler" is not going to be easy.
