Wedding cake- cutting costs

Lauren, on August 26, 2019 at 9:56 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 18
So I'm trying to cut costs where I can. One thing that is not super important to me is the cake. Don't get me wrong I love cake and I have a design I love (fairly simple) but I cant imagine spending hundreds of dollars on a cake! Would it be weird to get a 2 tier vanilla cake from a bakery with the design I like and then a vanilla sheet cake from Costco? Yes the vanilla cake may be a bit different but it's just vanilla cake so does it really matter that much? Plus I love Costco cake. Thanks for the opinions!

There are no rules on cake. Some people don't have one at all. And if you have just a little one, and sheet cake in the back, your guests aren't going to be measuring the cake and throwing shade because the cake served to the guests seems to be more than the cake that you cut.

Go for it! Another great way to save money is to have a cutting cake and serve cupcakes for guests.

Totally fine!! I think it's a pretty smart move actually! We probably would have done similar if our cake wasnt included in the package

We're doing all Costco sheet cakes , even the one we're cutting. Costco cakes are really yummy and at the end of the day this is one of those things I didn't care that much about either. Save the money where you can!

This is basically what we are doing! Originally we were going to spend $300+ on our cake, but decided to we can do 2 tier cake for the cake cutting and a large sheet cake for everyone and it’ll only cost us $150.

This is what we did. Had a small allergy friendly cutting cake and then bought 3 Costco sheet cakes. 2 chocolate, 1 vanilla. Everyone loved the cake, no one will know or care that it's from costco.

I have seen plenty of people choose that option. We decided to get a one-tier cake and 5 dozen cupcakes for guests to keep costs low. If you like Costco cake, get a Costco cake.

I couldn’t bring myself to consider spending hundreds of dollars on a cake either. My mom and I are making cupcakes (about 130 of them for our 65 guests). It’ll end up costing about $100, max and I know the quality of the baking will be up to my standards with little to no chance involved.

Luckily my cake was included in my packaging and I got a choice of bakeries. We only wanted a 2 tier cake for us to cut into and cupcakes for the guests who won't get a piece of the cake. Not only did this bakery agree but we ended up making a custom book shaped cake and got to choose 3 cupcake flavors (these things are HUGE just on their own, bigger than a slice of cake) plus they'll make us a one tier square cake in one of our wedding cake flavors for our one year anniversary so we don't need to freeze part of the original cake. All in all it was only $85 for the fondant work and we're extremely happy with it.

The cake wasn't a huge deal to me and if we hadn't been able to do what we did then I probably would have still done the same small cake and cupcakes but would have looked at Costco or Sam's Club first.
