Wedding budgets

Cherryl, on August 19, 2020 at 8:58 PM Posted in Planning 0 20
Hey guys! Just recently got married and a future military wife! We are planning our ceremony for 2022 and we are trying to figure out what a reasonable wedding budget is before we choose our venue. I know there are some venues in Northern California that are extremely expensive, but what do you guys consider an over priced wedding and one that sounds pretty reasonable? My family said they are willing to help with food expenses since they can get a little pricey. Would you say $30,000 too much for a wedding? Please let me know what your opinions are because I am open for any type of advice I could get! Smiley smile

It really depends heavily on the area, amount of guests, and exactly what type of wedding you want to have. Generally speaking, I think $30,000 is a good amount for a nice wedding (assuming you aren’t doing black or white tie affairs).

The best way to do it is to figure out how much you can honestly and comfortably 100% save each month. if it’s 1500 a month or 2000 a month, you can take that money and just put it into a savings. Multiply that by how many months you have until the date that you want to get married, or probably a month or two earlier depending on when your final payment would be to your venue, and that will be how much your wedding expenses will be.

My wedding is going to be about a bit over 30 grand and that’s only because we saved money by having our wedding on a Thursday instead of a Saturday with about 90 people. But keep in mind, the area that I live in is probably one of the most expensive areas in the country to get married.

I agree with Chrysta, the average cost really depends on the area. $30,000 seems to be about what many people would spend.

To me, overpriced only means something beyond your means or that puts you into debt. If you can reasonably afford it without going "wedding poor," and you both agree that's how you want to spend your money, that's the only thing that matters in my eyes! Just a word of caution, if you are going to accept financial help from your families, make sure that you all agree that no "strings" are attached (i.e. are they going to want a say in what food you choose, will they want to add more people to the guest list that you might not necessarily want, will they hold it over your head the whole time). I've seen couples on here accept financial help from family only to regret it later on, but they can't walk away because they've already made financial decisions/contracts at that point. Good luck!

Sounds reasonable! I live in Northern California about 30 minutes away from Livermore, and $30,000 does seem reasonable in my area considering there are other venues where people will pay $50 grand.

Sounds like it's a good deal for the area, depending on the number of guests! That includes all food/beverages/venue costs/etc, right? If it's in your budget and you are OK with the cost, go for it!

That’s average, but it’s all up to you and what you guys are comfortable with spending.

I live in North Cali now and think that is probably a reasonable budget for a medium size wedding here. Being originally from Tx, most of my friend circle have had 100-150 person weddings there - with some flowers, couple tier cakes, DJ, and at a venue designated for weddings- and have all spent in that price range.

For me, 30k is a great deal. I’m in NYC so the prices here can be upwards of 300pp at a lot of venues.

That's about what we spent in NYC ($30k), and we figure we got away with murder for having a wedding for that little.

Which is *terrifying* when I think about how... I don't actually make that much in a year. (...We had very generous family help.)

It's all about what you can afford/what is available in your region. There are many couples on here having a fabulous wedding for a third of that... but generally not in Northern CA or NYC.

Welllll . . our plan was $15,000 but somehow we're at $30,000 now lol I think it's a good budget to have nice things. And if it'll be in 2022 you'll have time to pay it off. Congratulations and happy planning ! Smiley heart

$30k is the average cost of a wedding. It also greatly depends on where you live. I think the right budget is what you can comfortably afford. Also, when budgeting, be aware that you will likely go over budget, so make sure to account for that. We went about $5k over.

Before I started planning our wedding, I would have said $30k is too much. Now that we are in the thick of things, it seems like $30k is right about average. When we found out how much the venue we chose was for weekday or a Saturday morning, we were shocked, thinking our $14k budget would be enough to get everything we wanted. We were so wrong! $24k later (excluding the honeymoon, rings, and attire) here we are! I think what matters most is not the amount you think you should spend, but what you are comfortable with. We will pay everything up front, in cash, maybe not the honeymoon prior to the wedding. Good luck!

Wow !!! That is amazing that you were able to keep it at 30k. The cost of living here and everything else is ridiculous, the same wedding a couple states a way would be so much less.

$30k is probably about average across the country but not sure if Northern Cali is considered above average or not. When setting the budget, also make sure you factor in things you and your SO might be spending for yourselves. Like is your dress in the budget, or is this an additional expense to yourself. We have a budget that is cut all kinds of different ways (factors in any financial aid, my dress vs his tux, GM gifts vs BM gifts, bach parties, etc), so make sure you establish what the budget covers too.

Our budget was 5,000 and I end up spending 8,000. I think this just my budget 10,000 is max.
