Wedding brunch reception: buffet vs plated?

Simplydeep, on August 28, 2018 at 1:44 PM Posted in Planning 0 21

Hi all,

We're having an early afternoon brunch reception for about 80 people and are trying to figure out our menu. I know it's been asked before, but looking for additional perspectives on preferences for a brunch buffet vs plated.

Either would have a couple of meat/seafood/veggie options and sweet/savory options, plus hopefully one station, but of course the buffet would have extra variety. There will be a cocktail hour with passed items as well.

I was leaning for the "ease" of plated but have heard so many people say they'd prefer a buffet for brunch that now I'm unsure. Buffet is the default but the menu can be customized and the price difference is negligible. Thanks Smiley smile

I personally prefer plated but my venue only does buffet with a large amount of people. But for Brunch people usually want more than one serving.

For an afternoon brunch, I'd much prefer buffet! The options, interaction with other guests, it feels more fun and yummy.

I assume you're serving breakfast and lunch items, since it's a brunch wedding? So I'd do buffet for sure. Then people have options!

Thanks! True, the interaction aspect wasn't something I was really thinking about!

Yep, both! I'd probably go all breakfast given the choice haha, but want the guests to have their pick Smiley smile So yea, it would be hard having people pick not just a protein but also breakfast vs lunch. Thank you!

Agree that buffet would be good for a brunch! I have heard that if plated isn't done well then things can be served cold and in my opinion there's not much worse than cold eggs!

I think there's a general consensus here :p Argh yea, cold eggs would be terrible! Well perhaps I'll do the buffet but have a plated fruit dish/bakery items preset so folks could start eating before their tables are called.

There's something lively about food stations or buffet. A sit-down can sometimes feel too stiff so I like getting up and moving around, especially for a fun brunch wedding.

I agree! I prefer a buffet either way because there are a lot of things that I don't eat and I hate to waste food.

I was prefer a buffet as then I can pick and choose what I can and want to eat. I hate being given a pre arranged plate which often contains numerous items I will not or cannot eat.

We're definitely hoping for a more relaxed "casual elegance" sort of vibe. I have never been to a wedding with stations but do think that will be a nice addition!

Not having a ton of waste would be a huge plus too! Thanks!

Fair enough! It'll be easier to accommodate picky eaters (I'm actually one of them haha) and the variety of dietary restrictions so everyone gets enough yummy food to eat.

I'd prefer buffet at a brunch wedding so people can pick their food and taste everything! I think plated meals are beautiful and very formal and elegant but I don't like having to pick my meal weeks in advance, and I like being able to try everything at a buffet!

This atmosphere is a lot more fun for a brunch wedding!

An omelette station or crepe station would be so yummy! Not sure if you're having alcohol but a mimosa bar would be fantastic. Guest could enjoy plain champagne, different mimosa flavors, or just plain juice in a fancy glass. It would look so pretty too:

Yesss! Brunch style open bar! Mimosas and Bloody Marys Smiley laugh (Hoping to be able to add on bellinis as well.) Plus beer and wine...I don't think we'll do extensive other options since it's a brunch.

Mimosas & Bloody Mary bar + beer should be fine! If your venue is offering the bar then offering 1 white (Chardonnay or Pinot Grigio) and maybe 1 red (Merlot) would be nice but maybe not necessary depending on your crowd. My fellow wine-loving friends would go for the Mimosa/Bloody Mary bar!
