Wedding band rules?

Mrs.bubs525, on February 28, 2015 at 3:11 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 29

FH and I bought our wedding bands a week or two ago. My band is a wrap. We showed them to FBIL and he told us that wraps as a band should only be worn for the first 5-10 years of marriage. After that, you are suppose to get an actual band. As anyone ever heard of something like this?! Are there wedding band rules I was unaware of? I was planning on keeping it for life...lol. These are my rings.

Our jeweler said to us we can get a second band after the 5th year of marriage but I didn't know what he was talking about. I thought he was just trying to make money lol

I haven't heard anything like THAT, but my gma says to not match my wedding band to my engagement ring (granted mine is a little odd, it's heart shaped and doesn't really match anything) but she said because at some point I will either upgrade my ring, or will just wear the band, it needs to be something that can stand alone. I feel like you do whatever you want to do! I think your rings look pretty! Smiley laugh

That sounds made up... or even if it's a "real rule," who says you can't break it? Wear what you want!

Thanks guys. Yeah, the only thing I could think of is maybe an older woman would not want to wear a wrap... Like it's too young or something? But in five years I won't even be 30 yet, so that doesn't really answer that. Or its just completely made up lol.

By any chance, does he sell wedding bands on the side? I have never in my life (and I'm considerably older than you) heard of such a thing. I've seen plenty of women from their 20's to their 60's wearing wraps. Don't worry about it.

Yeah, I've never heard that one either. The only reason I can think of to get a different band would be if you wanted something you could wear by itself on days when you don't want to wear the whole set. But it's beautiful the way it is!

I've never heard that, but oh well if it is true, its your wedding band and you love it, that's all that matters!

Isn't a "wrap" just 2 wedding bands?? lol. That said, I have never heard of this and doubt a guy (your FBIL) would know something about weddings that women don't.

I also have never heard of this. There is an engagement ring, a wedding band (whatever you choose it to be), and there are such things as anniversary bands. I have seen people add bands to there wedding set at milestone anniversaries. But then it is just adding another band onto what they already have.

Never heard of this. Wear what you want- what you have picked is beautiful. And also, FH's aunt has a wrap band that she wears and she is in her early 60s. So many people, are sentimental about their rings and would never dream of changing them- I am the same way.

I've never heard of this. Unless he was talking about an upgrade? But I thought traditionally that was done around the 20-25 year mark.

No he wasn't talking about an upgrade. He was implying wraps aren't meant to be worn after 5-10 years.
