Wedding at the Bahamas

Dusan, on March 15, 2024 at 5:26 PM Posted in Planning 0 5

Hi everyone,

I'm in the process of planning my wedding in the Bahamas and am a bit confused about the documentation required for obtaining a Marriage License. Some sources suggest that a birth certificate is necessary, while others indicate a passport is sufficient. Can anyone with experience in this matter provide some clarity or advice?

Also, we're looking for recommendations for a Marriage Officer who can conduct a small ceremony for just the two of us around April 16th. Any suggestions or contacts would be greatly appreciated as we organize our special day.

    #### Necessary Documentation for Getting Married in the Bahamas

To get married in the Bahamas, there are specific documentation requirements that need to be fulfilled. Here's a summary of the necessary documentation:

    **1. Residency Requirement:**

    - Couples must be in residence for 24 hours prior to applying for a marriage license.

**2. Birth Certificates and Notarized Affidavit:**

    - Birth certificates and a notarized affidavit are required for both parties.

    **3. Additional Documentation:**

    - If applicable, divorce papers, death certificate of a former spouse, and parental consent if under the age of 18 are also required.

**4. Valid Passport, Photo ID, and Evidence of Arrival:**

    - Both parties must produce a valid passport, birth certificate, and photo ID, as well as evidence of the date of their arrival in the Bahamas, such as the Bahamas Immigration Card or entry stamp in the passport.

    **5. Witnesses:**

    - Two witnesses, who are at least 18 years old, must sign the marriage license. If necessary, witnesses can be provided.

    **6. Marriage License Fee:**

    - The fee for the marriage license is $100, and certified copies of a marriage certificate are $20.

It's important to note that most hotels are equipped to assist guests with marriage arrangements, and the Registrar General Office in Nassau can provide more details and assistance regarding the necessary documentation and procedures for getting married in the Bahamas.

If you have any further questions or need assistance with planning your wedding in the Bahamas, feel free to reach out to the relevant authorities or wedding planners for personalized guidance and support.

Thank you Michael, I will definitely reach out. I think I reached out to some, but wasn't sure if they are legit. I am always suspicious when i find something online.

Also hopping that someone was recently was in same situation and they can share their experience, what was needed.

    Thanks again, really helpful!

Sure. I understand that concern. It does sound trustworthy to contact the Registrar General Office in Nassau. You could also contact the US Embassy to confirm that the process is acceptable.

More often than not, people often just do a symbolic ceremony overseas and get legally married in the courthouse before or after trip.
