Wearing hair down for the wedding!?!?

Mindy, on September 16, 2010 at 3:21 PM Posted in Planning 0 19

I am wanting to wear my hair either down or half way down and curly for the big day, for every one who has done this did the curls fall out before the night was over?

I had my hair down in curls (one side pulled back) for my sister's wedding.....by about 3pm the curls weren't as tight and started to fall out....I'm not sure what I'm going to do anymore..have modification to my hair I think...stupid straight hair who hates curls! LoL

I am doing this to but are just using two hair sprays (one to to style, and one to hold) I did a hair trial awhile back and it seems to hold pretty well for the day, although I wasnt moving around much either. Hoping that if they fall they will still look cute though, I wont care so much the day off but will of my pics look crappy! lol

It really depends on your hair. Mine is really thin and never holds curl, so I know that look wouldn't work on me.

I think it depends on the product used. I seen pics of one girls wedding, her hair was completely down & she wore a headband. It had large tight curls in the beginning and by the end of the night they had fallen so loose that it looked like she just had wavy hair. I think it depends on product & how much dancing, etc, you're gonna be doing that will affect your hair. Mine is going to be all the way up. And my original plans was to have it down & straight but it didn't go well with my veil & dress.

I want to do half up for the day, but hopefully my hair will hold since it's naturally pretty wavy. If you have straight hair you'd definitely want to do a trial and see how long it holds. Maybe you could do up for the ceremony and half up for the reception.

With wearing your hair half or all down there are a number of things that come into effect:

Time of year/temperature (Ex: Sweating will pull out the curls, stick to your back, loosen any backcombing etc.) Hair thickness and length (Heavier hair or longer lengths can weigh out your curls) and the products and METHOD In which is used to curl your hair...Typically flat iron curls will last longer than curling iron curls. You can add extra 'curl' first by doing a proper roller set to 'bend' the hair strands, thus making the curl a bit stronger and then go in and curl it.

We've had client's email us 2 days later just to let us know their curls are STILL IN! (Some even send pictures) We ONLY use flat iron curling methods...

Professional products verse drugstore products will also be a big factor in the hold of your curls. Many cheap brands contain heavy residues and waxes that will weigh down the hair and cause it to fall faster, rather than create "extra hold for you"...

    Side note:

We also tell all our brides that when deciding on hairstyle choices, especially 'down' styles... DO think past your ceremony and about how your reception hair is going to look. If you are going to tear up the dance floor, you’ll probably need your hair up, or partial up rather than completely down... otherwise it’ll frizz out and stick to your face, back and shoulders. It’s sexy at the bar (maybe?) but NOT in a $3,000 dress with pictures being taken that are meant to be your lasting memories of the day! Smiley sad

There’s no amount of photo-shopping that can be done to clean that up…

The warmer you yet, the messier the hair gets, the more your curls will risk falling. You pair that with the veil rubbing back and forth on it, people's arms tugging across it for hugs all day, high temperatures. These things need to be considered.

Thus the need for proper setting of the curls to ensure they last and the right product to hold it, regardless of 'hair types'.

    Hope that helps.

I'm going to ask a somewhat stupid question, but I truly don't know - Can't you just do a wet set to your hair and leave it in for about 24 hours to get extra hold?

I wore my hair half down. I washed and set it early in the morning the day before the wedding (Friday). I wore the set all that Friday and took it out and had it styled the morning of. My hair held the entire day

And my hair is normally curly, so when my lady blew it out and then curled it again it pretty much stayed. But then again, she sprayed LOADS of hair spray in it.

I'm wondering this myself since I just settled on a hairstyle which is a curly pony tail and totally a style that I was least considering..but it looks so cute! My hairstylist says it will hold all night so I'm gonna trust her. Trust your hairstylists girls! Especially if they come well recommended.

I'm wearing my hair half down and my hair is very thick and long, so in order to do this, I am having to have my hair "set" the morning of my renewal. Usually this is a technique used by African Americal women because their hair type won't hold curls, but I have discovered by way of my cosmetologist (who specialized in difficut to manage hair) that this technique is perfect for hair that doesn't hold curl very well.

If you have the option to have your hair PROPERLY Wet set, then yes...definitely a great idea to help hold the curl in longer!! Smiley smile

Everyone's hair will wear differently too. Some people (like myself) can not and will not, EVER Hold a curl...even a perm...2 days later, bone straight. Though only a small percentage of people are like this.

Typically with those that have hair the "doesn't curl" or "won't hold". 95% of the time it is either the way it's been done or the products used.

Some people will spray the hair to death in order to 'hold' a style. In most cases, this just weighs the hair down more and will cause it to fall faster...

As to Heather, if you hair is already naturally curly, you shouldn't usually have a problem anyways. It's just a matter of then "taming" the curls for most clients...

BUT, By blowing it out first, thus making the shaft of the hair "Straight" now, instead of working with the natural curl, this will just work things backwards for your hair and is very counter-productive with styling.

The reason some stylists will "blow out" the hair first is usually to "tame" it. But in doing so pulling out all the natural curl, then trying to put it back in, with a curling iron, then spraying the crazy out of it to hopefully hold.

This is why more professionals are working with the flat iron methods. It allows us to create a smooth, flawless curl, sealing the cuticles down and leaving the ends of the hair nice and crisp. By flatting the unruly hair and placing a curl into it, this helps achieve a longer lasting more flawless curl, whether that be a tighter "ringlet" style or a loose sexy wave!

I want mine to either be down or half-down for the ceremony. Since my wedding is in July near Lake Erie where the humidity is high, I have a very stylish friend who I will arm with bobby pins to put it up for the reception!

I have naturally curly hair, and for my birthday a while back, I took a curling iron and just "enhanced" the curls I already have. My curls did fall significantly, considering I have curly hair already. I was surprised and disappointed. But what Felicia said makes sense. Talk to your stylist about all of that. Good luck!

Pics below. I wanted something alittle less "stiff" and more loose curls, but they would never have holded.
