Wearing black to a wedding?

Brittany, on August 23, 2020 at 5:16 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 18
I’m attending a wedding in October that recently had to switch venues due to current circumstances, because of this I feel like my outfit is no longer appropriate (it went from a garden venue at a state park to a mansion). I went looking for a new outfit with my parents this weekend and everything I liked was black, which my father said is bad luck at a wedding. Is this true? Has anyone heard this before? Should I not wear black?

I’ve heard that it’s supposed to be bad luck, but a lot of grooms wear black so apparently that doesn’t count? I personally think this superstition is ridiculous. It wouldn’t bother me if someone showed up wearing black (though it would be weird for our venue and early morning), as long as they are comfortable I don’t care what guests wear.

Depends on cultures and everything. Is it that you were disappointed by the change of venue that makes you like black?

I don't see an issue with wearing black to a wedding. We had guests that wore black to our wedding. Our friend's mom wore black as mother of the groom at his wedding. No one thought anything of it.

No, not at all! It kinda went from an outfit I had for months that was perfect for a garden by the beach to a really up scale fancy mansion so I feel like a flowly floral dress is no longer appropriate to the vibe of the wedding. So when I went to go look at things that felt more appropriate for their new venue all the dresses I like were black...

I feel the same way! Idc what you wear as long as you look pulled together! Their wedding is in the evening and it’s a fancier venue so I feel like my original floral dress isn’t appropriate.

I mean depending on who you talk to and their traditions different things can be bad luck. I was going to have fake flowers on my day and my friend's mom said that is bad luck ha ha. I mean brides wear black so you should do what makes you happy. If anything it is not traditional but traditions change throughout time.

It really depends on the culture and where you’re from. My family is from the southern states and my mom and the older ladies in my family were very adamant about women not wearing black to weddings. Superstitious are interesting things.

I think it's fine. Also, you will definitely not be the only person wearing black at a fall evening wedding at a mansion.

I personally wear black to weddings all the time. Especially when it's a formal wedding, black is ideal. I've honestly never heard of not wearing black to a wedding until the weddingwire forums. I'm from the east coast and wearing black to weddings is not just common, but often expected!

That is so silly. If you find a black dress that you're absolutely in love with, I say go for it. I've seen some brides in black and it's so heartwarming lol. Absolutely gorgeous. Don't let anyone make you feel different.

I've heard that before, but I think most brides these days are much less inclined to superstition.
