Wear a backless wedding dress with a tattoo?

Priscilla, on September 8, 2015 at 2:05 AM Posted in Planning 0 14

Hi! We are having a Catholic church wedding. I love backless wedding dresses and also like strapless ones. But I have a medium sized tattoo of a black and red spider in the middle of my back that would definitely be seen. I love my tattoo and normally would not be worried about covering it up, but I'm not sure how that will work for the church. Would it be inappropriate for me to wear a dress where the tattoo would be visible? Any ideas? I'm going dress shopping next weekend. Thanks for your help!

You may be better off asking someone at the church about it. It's not going to matter what anyone says here if it matters to the church.

Ask your church/priest before you go shopping.

I know in my catholic church (and I think most others as well) you cannot be showing that much skin. No backless OR strapless dresses are allowed. You have to be wearing something with sleeves or a shawl to cover up during the ceremony.

Personally, I see no problem with it. I showed my tattoos (not a church wedding) and if you like it you should show it off.. but you may be restricted by the church.

Our priest doe not have an issue with my strapless dress but I do have a topper over it so it has sleeves (ETA to hide my tattoo). Better to ask now than regret later!

I would recommend wearing a bolero that matches your dress just for the ceremony.

Thanks, everyone, for helping me think it through! I think you're right that I'm going to need a topper or bolero for the ceremony and then I can take it off for the reception.

I did, but it couldn't be seen at all because of my hair. I wore it down low and curled, and my tattoo is dead center in my upper back. My dress was a low v back, and my hair is normally waist length.

    My grandma didn't know I have a tattoo - she still doesn't.

Oh! My make up artist offered to cover it for me. That may also be an option for you. Mine is huge and black, and she said it would be no problem.

I think you should rock the backless at your reception, and have a cover up for the ceremony - just in case!

Definitely talk to the priest who will be performing your ceremony. I don't think the issue is one of body modification as much as it is exposed skin. There have been quite a few WW brides who have worn strapless/backless gowns covered with a bolero for their church wedding ceremonies, but those boleros come off during the reception.

If the church doesn't mind, I say rock it.

Also talk to your make up artist. If it's a small tattoo they might be able to cover it with make up.

I say rock it as well.. It's part of you and you should not cover it.

I'd ask the church I'd they'd allow it. My friend has a tattoo on her back that she covered up with makeup since she has a strapless dress. But it's ultimately up to you!

They make special make-up (waterproof) for tattoo's and maybe at the reception you can take the make-up off. Personally I love tattoos, but i know churches have different opinions (especially catholic) you should deffinatly talk to the church before you make a descion for a dress I know some churches wont allow strapless and lots of skin.
