We are torn if we want to write our own vows.

Writing our own vows sounds lovely in theory, and I have seen some amazing readings, but I am not sure if we have it in us. We are not super lovey-dovey and it just may come across as awkward, however, they are just so much more personal and special. Does anyone regret not writing their own for...

Does anyone regret not writing their own for their wedding?

And if you decided to write your own, was it in anyway a stressful experience?

@Faith's vows brought me to tears and 1000% confirmed that FH and I just don't have that in us lol

Nope, not doing it. Not our thing. I mean, I think it can be lovely when done well, but we're both very private people and saying our own vows at the ceremony feels like reading an intimate love letter in front of everyone :-/

However, I love Breezy and katie90's idea of writing and exchanging personal vows before the ceremony. Maybe in an actual letter.

We really should have this decided by now, but we don't. As it stands right now, we aren't doing our own nor the traditional ones, but something in between. I'm seriously considering the vows from Game of Thrones. It's simple, recognizable, and fitting since I'm pagan. But also quirky and nerdy like us. But I am worried that one day I'll regret it.

"Father. Smith. Warrior. Mother. Maiden. Crone. Stranger. I am his/hers, and s/he is mine, from this day, until the end of my days."

Why not find some vows you like online and then just embellish or remove to make them more personal? shouldn't be a novel, so that's what I'm going to do...

We are writing our vows together. Then our officiant will say it and we will repeat. I guess that's semis traditional.

My Fiance is very firm with writing his own vows, I am scared s***less. He is a waaay better writer than I am and I have terrible stage fright..... gah. I'd be lucky if I can read my index card let alone say it aloud. It would probaly be weird if I say one sentence and he says 8.... right?

The traditional religious vows we used in our ceremony had enough meaning to us. It was a relief to me to not write our own vows. But it is definitely a personal choice and it can be very sweet when done right.

I hate public speaking, and the thought of trying to remember what I wrote and say something emotional like that in front of a whole bunch of people is just not something I want to do.

Our current plan is to just do the traditional vows at the ceremony, and maybe write our own to read to each other in private on the night of.

I didn't think writing our vows would be an option, since we're having a Catholic ceremony, but now I'm seeing people who have done, or are doing, the same and are able to write their own vows, in addition to saying the traditional ones. I would LOVE to do this, so I'm going to ask the parish about it.

FH was a groomsmen at a wedding back in December, in which the bride and groom wrote their own vows. FH barely held it together up there, so it'll be interesting to see how he does when it's our turn. :-)

I originally didn't want to write our own because it makes me super nervous and I've never actually been to a wedding before, so I hate the thought of doing it wrong because I've never seen it done. But lately it seems like things I want to say have just been popping into my head left and right. Then when I talked to FH about it he really surprised me, he was so adamant that he wanted us to write our own. I'm excited but also scared!

We wrote our own vows. I really wanted to and he was not so keen on writing anything. Then I saw this awesome suggestion from Celia on one of the discussions:

3 things you love about your SO & 3 things you promise

We did that and it worked. It kept mine shorter (I can be verbose) and helped DH structure his. I actually had him dictate his vows and I typed them up because he was so averse to putting pen to paper.

We were going to... but we are both going to be super nervous. We're gonna write letters to each other to read in private before the ceremony instead.

Also, the vows can be different from what you say at the ring exchange....

FH and I have no interest whatsoever in doing this. We met with our officiant last night and he had several lovely options for vows that we chose from instead. We're just not that gushy with each other, even in private, so I think for us, doing something like that at our ceremony would just feel weird.

One couple did not e-mail their vows to me ahead of time. At the ceremony, the groom pulled out a sheet of paper and read his wonderful, heartfelt, romantic vows. I then turned to the bride and she said, "Ditto." I asked the groom, "Are you going to let her get away with that?" He replied, "That's 'our thing'."

I'm going to have our officiant (or more likely his wife!) Read ours to make sure they "match" in length and tone. But yes, definitely writing our own! I am big into words of affirmation and so it was important to me.

I don't enjoy spilling my emotional guts out in front of other people, but there are things I want to say and vow to FH. so we are saying traditional vows at the ceremony..but will exchange our own written vows to each other probably the day before.

We're just doing the traditional vows. Neither of us are good with words so it would probably come out awful lol
