Virginia/north Carolina Honeymoon Help

Shannon, on October 2, 2019 at 9:25 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 11

We are getting married October 2020 in Clarksville, VA. The budget for and when we take our honeymoon is still up in the air at moment. We're having a bit of trouble coming up with good ideas for what area to go to for our honeymoon. Given the whole questionable budget thing, it would probably be best to stick around VA or maybe even NC since we live roughly 5-minutes from the state line.

I know a popular option would be VA Beach area and Nags Head. The beach isn't really our thing, though, and we both would be ready to leave within an hour. Plus we live within minutes of Lake Gaston so we have the mentality of "why go to the beach when we can just go to the lake". We are really into history/art museums, wineries/meaderies, and mountains. Our honeymoon would likely take place sometime in mid-autumn to early-winter if we have the budget for it. I'm not entirely sure if heading up into the mountains would be the wisest decision during that time though (I've only ever gone during the hotter months).

FH and I are having our honeymoon in Bryson City, NC in a log cabin on a mountain with AMAZING views. We are staying for almost a week for 650$ (I think) (we paid half when we planned and half when we get there so it’s easier). It will be this month I’m so excited to see the beautiful fall scenery there, we absolutely LOVE the mountains. I personally hate the beach , like literally I refuse to ever go near it lol. But the mountains are so captivating. There are many places to stay, we have stayed in Asheville before on vacation in December and it snowed a lot and I just can’t describe how absolutely gorgeous it was. I highly recommend honeymooning in those areas. We thought about pigeon forge but decided on Bryson City to save money. This is who we booked with but there are many many other places online to look at. Prices vary! https://www.carolinamountainvacations.com/

If you’re on a strict budget then a hotel is also nice, we are vacationing in Asheville again this December at a hotel, (westgate) we had a good view of the mountains last time and breakfast was free. They will even leave wine and chocolates for you if you request it. Our trip will be around 300$ for 4 nights (I suck at remembering lol).

Hope this helps! If you do decide to stay in NC mountains, don’t forget a camera 🤗

I live in Virginia Beach. If you're into museums and breweries, look into Norfolk. Downtown is vibrant with a gorgeous museum and thriving arts district. There are amazing restaurants everywhere and you can also check out some of the historical sites that are everywhere here. If you're into more rural I hear Ashville, NC is incredible. I haven't been personally but have friends that live there and others that go all the time.

So many great ideas from the previous posters, Shannon! Do any of them appeal to you and your FS and what you’re looking for from your honeymoon?

I'm in RVA. I'd look into Charlottesville or Williamsburg if you want wineries and history with museums. We are getting married 10/10/20 and I think we are going to stay in Crabtree Falls (Nelson County) at a B&B and go around maybe Devils Backbone and Lynchburg Area to some breweries. Lexington is a small cute town too. There is a TON to do in Charlottesville and I know a lot of people are having their bach parties there as well.

I live in Richmond, so I may be biased. I agree with fellow posters. Norfolk is great! RVA is an up-and-coming area with one of the best art museums in the east coast, great restaurants, still the ability to walk around and explore, very historical. There are also several wineries in the surrounding area with a meaderie in Scott's Addition. You could always take a day-trip to the mountains without staying a long time from Richmond. The hiking is great, but it will be crowded because the leaves are changing.

It looks like I found my date twin! Charlottesville sounds like a nice idea. We've been around there a few times, but only in passing or on business. Usually if we take a day trip, it's to hang out around Richmond since we love The Fan and my sister/brother-in-law near Manchester.

We're definitely fans of the Richmond area. I agree with you that it is up-and-coming.
You brought up a good point that hadn't occurred to us: changing leaves can bring crowds. I'm not super fond of crowds, so that's something to consider. My initial concern had been how the winter conditions might if we wait until December.
