Videographer Question: Picking Music

allysia, on June 21, 2015 at 8:15 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

Hi guys,

For those who had a videographer, who picked the music? Did your videographer allow you to choose?

My FH and I have a song that's really special to us that we would like to be used, but I also understand that the videographer may want to have creative control over the editing. I've just started the search for a videographer so I'm going to of course ask this question to them but I was just curious about other people's experiences

Thanks

It depends on the videographer. Some will let you pick the specific song, some will have you provide options, and some choose themselves. Ours used a company that writes music for various things such as wedding videos so the song in our video isn't a mainstream song, but it was still a great song and worked well with our video.

It was in the contract that the videographer picked the music. I wanted a specific song as well, but most videographers can't afford the price tag on most popular songs, so keep that in mind. Ours picked a great instrumental song for ours that fit out personalities well.

I am not sure if this is Maryland specific or if it is applicable across the country. I hired my videographer back in 2014 and told him early in 2015 I wanted a specific song. He said if it was last year no problem but recently, they made a new law in which the videographer couldn't just download the song from like youtube or something for free. He gave us two website and let us pick any song that was $50 or less in which he would covered. I had my heart set on a song but it wasn't on either website.

I am sure you can pick the song if you have the videographer write it into the contract. However, understand that they may cut the song if it is too long.

    Good luck!

The copyright thing shouldn't REALLY be an issue in itself, but the problem is that videographers want to be able to post the videos online, in which case they can't use anything they don't have the rights to.

I specifically asked my videographer if we would have a say in the song-- he said we could give our input but ultimately it was up to him-- nope. We didn't know what song he was using until we got the video Smiley sad It sucks b/c we specifically ruled out ppl b/c they had told us up-front that they would have complete control.

So, you can certainly ask, but if they say "yes", make sure it is in your contract.

My contract specified if I don't give the song to the videographer prior to editing then he would pick the song for me.

@Barbara I understand wanting to upload it to youtube / vimeo etc, couldn't they just change it to w.e music they want to so they can upload it and just leave us with our personal copy.

To answer your question to @Barbara, a videographer wouldn't do that. It takes A LOT of work to edit a video to a specific song, they have to make sure it in synch though out the whole song. Your way would not be time effective for them.

I understand your pain, I had a song I really wanted too.
