Venue won't refund deposit for clean up

Lauren, on June 29, 2017 at 10:51 PM Posted in Planning 0 10

Hey guys! I am a happy newlywed of a full month now! There's only one after issue. When we paid for our wedding venue, we had to pay a $250 deposit to ensure cleanup after our event. Venue told us that we'll will get it back in the mail 2 weeks after the wedding. It has been a month and we haven't gotten it back yet. We cleaned up everything and I mean everything. Our venue even told us we had to take our trash with us that night so we did! Now we have been calling for a few days to ask why we haven't been refunded the $250 clean up deposit and we can't get a call back. I'm afraid they are ignoring us. Should we just forget about it? Does anyone have any ideas of what we should do ?

If they won't pick up the phone, pay them a visit.

Go to the venue during business hours and ask

If they can't provide you with reason for withholding the deposit, you should be able to get it back. I'd be knocking on the door!

Oh no honey..... It's time to show up and handle your business. Take your contract with you. This is unacceptable.

I definitely wouldn't push this to the side. $250 is a good chunk of change. I would continue contacting them via phone or maybe even show up and find out what's going on. It's very possible they are busy due to other weddings, but they shouldn't ignore you - that's just bad business. Don't give up on this, get your deposit back.

They should refund you, they are likely just busy with it being wedding season. Keep at them, leave messages or stop in, I'm sure you'll get it back. Is it in your contract that you'll get the refund in 2 weeks, or is that just something they said?

Show up in person. Or, if that fails or you aren't able to get to the venue for whatever reason, send a certified letter by mail that requires a signature that inquires as to when you will receive your deposit back.

I believe certified letter is gold legal standard.

UO: I also believe most places will find some excuse to keep "damage" or "clean up" deposits. It's worth trying though! (At least if it's in your contract that you'll get it back.)

Pammat, I agree that many places will try to keep the deposit, BUT the fact that they have not registered a specific complaint as to any issues for a month I think makes their case weak. Yes, certified letter, email and then small claims court.
