Venue won't let us do a tasting

Jamie, on April 21, 2017 at 8:21 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 30

We picked an all inclusive venue to make things easier. During our initial consultation I asked about doing a tasting, and our coordinator said they do restaurant nights and gave me an approximate date of the next on, saying she would verify and get back to us. Now they are saying they are too busy, but we can go to the farmers market they go to to try samples instead. We live two hours away and would have to take off work to go to a farmer's market to try the food we are paying thousands of dollars for?! This seems ridiculous to me. I'm incredibly frustrated. I really want to call them and tell them this is unacceptable, but I don't think it would actually get any thing accomplished.

I wouldn't have booked my all inclusive without tasting the food first. Thankfully our tour included a full dinner for FH, me and 4 other people of our choosing.

Unacceptable. tell your venue you booked them on the conditions that you would get a tasting.

My venue doesn't offer a tasting either. I don't think it's a big deal. It got great reviews online so I trust it. Have you looked at reviews online?

My venue doesn't offer a tasting either. I do know many people who were guest at weddings at mine and all loved the food and venue though.

I think not having a tasting is a big deal. I would make an appointment to go in and speak with someone about it. How are you supposed to choose entrees if you have no idea what they will taste like?

If they did tell you about having one they definitely need to honor it.

All of the reviews rave about the amazing Italian food, and the only reason we wanted the tasting is because we couldn't pick the second dish, I thought we should go with the chicken cacciatore, and he thought the prosciutto stuffed chicken breast. I figured easiest way to settle it would be to taste them

We do have an appointment on the 6th of may to go in for a wine tasting so we can pick which wine we are buying. I'll speak to them at length about it then. I was just hoping to get it resolved sooner because we owe 50% at the 6 month mark which is next month.

Sorry, that is completely unacceptable to me. I have an AI venue and a tasting is in the contract. What is in your contract?

I'd be pissed. Quality of customer service definitely factors into my vendor choices and, to me, that is shitty service. You're paying them thousands of dollars; they can let you sample the food. I would keep pushing on this.

Our venue offers a tasting AFTER you book, and 2 months before the wedding. Not many venues offer tastings prior to booking - that's rare.

Do they not do them at all or just the immediate future?

I had to go to the chefs restaurant to do a tasting with a bunch of other people. He only does tastings every couple of months

That sucks! I would be pissed too. Especially since they mentioned the restaurant nights thing and then went back on it. Shitty. If they can't fix it for you, put it in your review to warn other brides!

Is it in the contract that you get a tasting? Our venue had it in our contract.

If the issue is just the chicken dish, I'd go for the one without ham. Having ham in a dish limits the number of people that can eat it.

I would fight this with then because you booked with the idea that they would provide a tasting. Also it's kind of a big 'unknown' to just overlook.

I think a tasting is absolutely necessary. Our caterer had a dinner night with a few different couples and had samples of things that we had each expressed interest in. Food is so important. They should definitely make a tasting happen for you.

If a tasting is a do or die issue, then you should have made sure your contract afforded you a tasting. However, you wrote, "There's no mention of tastings in the contract". So, they aren't obligated. If you couldn't live with that, why did you sign with them?

We spent roughly $42K on my daughter's 85 guest wedding (nine years ago) -- a bulk of that went to the stunningly beautiful, all inclusive venue on a Saturday night. If we wanted a tasting, according to the contract, we had to attend a dinner and order the food, and pay for it. We read every sentence in that contract and all of us realized what our obligations were. That's why contracts exist -- if you sign it, it means both parties have come to a meeting of the minds.

If you want to blame anyone, blame your coordinator. She's the one who said, "they do restaurant nights", and she's the one who gave you the approximate date of the next on -- not the venue. She was supposed to verify everything and get back to you, right? Among the other duties you're paying her for, she's supposed to go over your contracts and tell you what you get and what you don't get for your money -- at least that's my understanding of why people hire wedding coordinators.

If their reviews are amazing, you'll be fine.
