Venue will not return a deposit for event 10 months away

I am very upset as we booked for an event for 2024 and we were told many times we have the right to cxl up until a few weeks before event but now that we are trying to cxl the vendor declines to give our deposit back. The event is not for another 10 months. I am hoping wedding wire can assist in getting our money back as this is absolutely fraud. And the vendor is telling us that he doesn't even have our money anymore...

Did you sign a contract? If so, what is listed in your contract about the cancellation policy?

Refer back to the contract you signed with the vendor. It should specify exactly what happens if you were to cancel. If your contract states you may cancel with no penalty and receive a full refund, then you may need to contact a lawyer to help recover your funds.

Typically deposits are non-refundable but like others have suggested read the contract. If there's no contract then it'd your word against theirs which is why it's not recommended not to book a vendor without a contract.

As the others said, check your contract. Usually when a vendor says you can cancel with no penalty up until a certain time, that means you don’t owe the remainder of the balance. But the deposits are usually non-refundable to protect the vendors since they have to start turning away other couples as soon as you’re booked.
