Venue help! Fox Hollow, Watermill Caterers and Westbury Manor - Long Island, NY

mackenzie, on February 27, 2017 at 2:13 PM Posted in Planning 0 17

Hi everyone!

We've narrowed our venue search down to three: Watermill Caterers, Fox Hollow (the garden terrace) and Westbury Manor. We live in California and my in-laws are looking for us. For those of you that have visited these venues or used them yourself...what are the pros and cons? Which was your favorite?

Thank you!

ETA: We've decided on Westbury Manor! Please see my response below Smiley smile

I have only been to a wedding at Fox Hollow.

    The food was just ok.

    Venue was gorgeous though.

I've been to a wedding at Fox Hollow. I was underwhelmed TBH. The cocktail hour food was delicious but there was not enough places to sit with your food that required a seat. (like cutting a piece of meat)

The recption dinner was horrible! Only one person at our table finished their meal. FH and I both got Salmon and it was so dry we poured some of our wine on it to try to help it. FSIL's date got duck and even that was dry. Its almost impossible to make duck dry!

The venue itself was pretty, but they also had the ceremony facing into the setting sun so basically everyone was shielding their eyes and couldn't see anything. (4PM ceremony start in September)

I've been to all except Westbury Manor. I thought Fox Hollow was absolutely beautiful. I don't remember the food being terrible. I've been to Watermill several times. It's very cookie-cutter-ish to me. Nothing about it makes it stand out.

Between those two I'd pick Fox Hollow.

Fox hollow is beautiful. Nice fireplace. Idk food. Not sure why they didn't cancel a wedding in the Jonas Winter Storm. Barely anyone made it.

I've been to a wedding at Westbury Manor and I wholeheartedly recommend it! It's BEAUTIFUL, and the rooms get done up so nicely. The dance floor was huge so there was lots of room for everyone, and they have a beautiful outdoor area with a dramatic fountain.

And the food is incredible! They did a surf and turf entree with filet and lobster tail that was absolutely amazing and my mother (who was a vegetarian at the time) said that the mushroom risotto was the best vegetarian wedding food she had ever had. She was so happy counting all the different kinds of mushrooms!

The staff were really helpful and polite as well.

I don't know the other places, but Westbury is a strong choice.

Are you having ceremony at the venue? Although we liked the grounds of Westbury Manor the room for the reception and where the indoor ceremony would be held in inclement weather was underwhelming. They had a good price tho. Good luck!

Thank you so much everyone! We're having our ceremony at St Paraskevi's Greek Churh in Greenlawn. We have narrowed it down to Watermill and Westbury. I love that Westbury is larger and has one wedding at a time but I can't get over how gorgeous Watermill is. For those of you that have seen both, which left a better impression? Thanks again!!

Hi, these are actually the only three venues FH and I looked into! All three are beautiful, but we eventually decided on Westbury Manor for a few reasons. The outside grounds are just stunning and they decorate the venue for each season. We are having an October wedding and the place will be filled with mums, hay bales, and pumpkins. There is just so much character and charm inside, and they only do one wedding at a time! This was also helpful in setting times for the reception (Fox Hollow and the Watermill gave us later start times--cocktail hour starting at 8:30 pm on a Friday night, which to us was very late). Westbury Manor allowed us to decide our own time. The food options are endless, cocktail hour comes complete with a huge amount of hor d'oeuvres as well as different food stations to choose from. The dinner menu has 7 options for guests to choose from and covers all the bases. Price-wise, all three were relatively comparable, but it also depends on how many guests, time of year, and day of the week. Overall, they were all great to work with and a tough choice to narrow down, but Westbury Manor just really stood out for both of us!

Some of the pros and cons for each:

    The Watermill:

Beautiful indoor and outdoor areas for ceremony.

    Outdoor area for cocktail hour.

    Reasonably priced.

    Late start time.

Some would say it has a "cookie cutter" feel.

    Fox Hollow:

    Absolutely beautiful inside.

    Late start time.

Wasn't a fan of how there was no designated dance floor.

    Westbury Manor:

Stunning outside area for pictures and cocktail hour.

    One wedding at a time.

    Food is delicious.

Slightly more expensive than the other two.

    @Nicole...we must have similar taste!

Thank you all so much for the information and your candid reviews. We've decided to go with Westbury Manor and will be getting married on June 10th, 2018. For future brides that see this, please comment with questions and I'll be happy to send any info that I can on WM.

We decided on Westbury for several reasons:

    - size of the large ballroom (so much room for dancing!)

    - lush gardens and outdoor cocktail space

    - overall aesthetic of the manor

    - only one wedding per day

    - so many food options

    - in-house florist

    - they have their own wedding planning app

Thanks again and happy planning everyone!

My venue is Westbury Manor. We booked it because not only is the venue stunning but they gave us great pricing, they will most definitely work with you! The food is great, the property is beautiful, they have two stunning peacocks that freely roam the grounds, your wedding cake is included in your contact with a fantastic well known and popular local bakery. They have two reception rooms that can hold a small or large event so you're not limited to one capacity or guest minimum. There is a vintage bar style lounge where your guests are ushered into when they arrive and are given champagne and strawberries along with tea, coffee, other fruit and danishes. This room is where you can also have your cocktail hour in if you don't want it outside (weather permitting though, you'll want it outside!). They seasonally decorate the manor for you and all of the flower decor for your ceremony (not bouquets) is included and taken care of by their personal florist. They include a lot and their staff are some of the nicest people we've had the pleasure of working with.

I've been to the Watermill for a wedding recently and it was okay. The ceremony was inside and it was not aw inspiring. It just looked like a ceremony in an empty hall. The food was good though and the cocktail room was really nice. There was another wedding happening at the same time though and that wedding's guests kept walking into our reception.

ETA: Just saw your update. Welcome to Team Westbury! Hope your day is everything you could hope for!

@Kate...Fox Hollow and Watermill both do more than one wedding at a time. Westbury was the only one we looked at that was one wedding per day. FH actually went to a wedding at Fox Hollow several years ago (the Somerley) and he said he accidentally walked into the wrong cocktail hour and had a plate of calamari before realizing it wasn't his party. Oops!! With that being said, I wouldn't always trust the venue when they say they keep things separate.

    @GreeneBunny it's a great date!!

@Veronica...yay! We are so excited to have it at the Westbury Manor. I hope your wedding was a beautiful day for you both!

We heavily considered Westbury. It's lovely, and they give you so much ! They really seem to take care of their clients. Didn't go with it, but I would've been perfectly happy if we had. Great choice !
