Venue Fee

Jill, on December 18, 2019 at 5:28 PM Posted in Planning 0 7
Hi everyone. My fiancé and I picked a venue and date that we were excited about. However, the event planner there is new and can’t seem to answer many questions herself. Every question I ask, she responds, “Let me get back to you on that.” Last week, I asked her if the event fee (20%) was just on the catering and day of specifics or if it was also on the venue fee of $3900. Initially, she told me it was only on the former. The next week, she emails me that there is a 20% fee on every single line item, including our venue fee. Is this standard practice? Is everyone else encountering similar event fees? It seems like another way that this industry tries to screw us all butI want to hear from others.

My venue doesn't even have event fees? It's just a set price along with the additional price for using one of their bartenders.

We have a 20% service fee but that's only on food and beverage, the venue fee is a flat rate.

Sorry your venue is being difficult, a lot of venues go through planners like crazy

Welcome to the WeddingWire community Jill!

I'm sorry that you are having such trouble with your venue coordinator. Are all of the details about payments and additional charges outlined in your contacts that you can refer to?

Everything you're asking should be in writing in your contract. If it isn't, try to have a sit down (or a phone call) with the coordinator to get those things into the contract. Money issues should always be very clearly spelled out, in writing, to protect all parties.

It is vague in the contract. It says there is a 20% event fee. This is listed on the catering menu. It does not say this anywhere else and they were evasive about this. We do not have a finalized contract yet because it is dependent on our style of service ( plated vs buffet), which is dependent on their new menu rollout which is still in the works. We are still 8 months out from our wedding, fortunately. So, if they don’t compromise and we can find a better offer, I’m perfectly willing to walk away from them. I do not buy in to this ridiculous surcharge for weddings.

Ok, I get you. I sometimes think these venues are purposely vague in their contract language in order to get more money out of people! Grrr......

But I'm glad to hear that you are not already stuck with a vague contract. You can absolutely ask them to write in specifics that you and the venue have agreed upon. That protects you and them. And if they refuse, then you walk--their loss. I hope it doesn't come to that, as I know the relief of finally having a venue booked, and that task crossed off the list.

Our venue also has a 20% service fee, but it's separate from the venue fee, which is just a flat fee.

Thanks for sharing your experience. My goal was to hear if anyone else is facing these fees. It makes it easier for me to advocate for myself and fiancé. Thanks again and good luck to you.
