Venue contracts

Rebecca, on June 8, 2020 at 6:06 PM Posted in Planning 0 5

We are trying to plan for our early 2021 wedding but I am so nervous about signing a contract. Almost all the venues I have seen have very strict cancellation clauses with no refunds and weak force majeure clauses. How are you all dealing with this?

Are you nervous about the idea that what if something happens and you can't get out of the contract? usually places would let you at least postpone or cancel but lose money you've already paid.

From what I've seen, most places have a nonrefundable policy, but will allow you to re-book/postpone should something happen. I understand your apprehension though. the thought of just losing money is something happens is a lot to think about.

We just signed for our May 21 wedding! Try to get a feel for a venue's respectability, do research on reviews, etc. It sounds like if you are reading the contracts then you already are getting a good idea! Our venue is only 10% down of the flat rate (first 30 guests), and will only begin charging additional penalty once within 3 months of the wedding date. And it had a proper force majeure clause for unexpected reasons, acts of God. It's scary to sign this early but venues also have a reputation to uphold. It might also be worth finding out how they are handling covid cancellations/postponements right now.

I would create a discussion about the venue in question and ask brides how the company is handling weddings during this time. Even with a force majeure or Act of God clause, venues will never give your money back. Most rather work with you before they refund you.

I agree with others ask the venue how they're handling this pandemic situation for other couples. My contract has a no cancellation policy as well but I already asked if we need to postpone they will honor our pricing and any money paid into the new date. I didn't ask about a full cancellation because I know even if we postponed we'll eventually have it
