Venue Cancelled!!!

Kendra, on May 24, 2018 at 4:19 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 16
My venue just cancelled on me this morning only 85 days out from the wedding! We've had it booked for 10 months and invitations already went out. Has this happened to anyone else? If so, how did you get through it without losing your cool???

Oh my goodness! Does your contract say anything about them cancelling? Are you getting money back?

First I would try and find a quick replacement and then let guests know ASAP. If you can't, like within a week max, let your guests know that the event is going to be pushed back.

    I'm so sorry, this sucks.

We booked a venue through airbnb and I guess some recent guests trashed the property so they were no longer letting people use it. Smiley sad

Ah, yes unfortunately this is a little different. See if any venues have availability let and can work with your price range. Look into parks and recs places too.

How many guests were you expecting?

I all so sorry to hear this. I started to go that route and decided against it. I didn't realize that they have different rules when it comes to cancelling. I would find a venue asap and then assign guests to be called. If you can still keep it in the general area of where you initially were going to hold it. Then notify everyone of the change. If you don't want to disclose why, you can say you needed to accommodate all of your guests and the previous venue wasn't up to your standards?

Some venues have good deals and discounts when you book your wedding in a smaller timeframe so you may be in luck there. There is a local venue near us (a restaurant) that is going bankrupt and closing and all the people are SOL that were getting married this summer. Local venues have been offering to help those whom weddings have been cancelled.

This same thing happened to me, thankfully it was before wedding invitations went out. I change to a restaurant venue and found a butterfly house I could get married in. It ended up being the best thing that could have happened. How many people are you having? Would a private room in a restaurant work for you?

The last minute pricing is a good idea. You might even being able to pull a couple bids on this. Larger events mean good money for venues so if they have an opening soon and you're ready to sign a contract you can probably haggle with them a bit.

You might even get a good deal on something nicer than you thought you could afford. Can it hurt to try? This would stress anyone out, but use it as a chance to get even more of what you want if possible.

    Good luck!

I'm so sorry that this is happening to you! I agree with PP on possibly being able to find a better deal now. I know that my venue had two cancellations during peak season this year and they're offering 20% off to get them booked. Hopefully something good can come out of all this bad! Good luck and keep us posted!

Thank you all so much for sharing your ideas and experiences! I honestly had no even thought about deals because I was so focused on what we weren't getting. Haha. That's again for all the support! I will keep updating as things unfold!

I know it depends on the part of the country you're in, but in AZ, the summer months are awful for restaurants - people on vacation, it's hot out, etc. Definitely check out restaurant ideas!

Happened to me...venue got new owners who claimed as they were renovating they found structural damage so bad the roof could collapse at any time so they were shutting it down 6 months before my wedding date! We decided to just go the simpler route and find a nice restaurant with a big enough banquet space and do something more low-key. What can you do? We had already visited over 10 venues and went to 4 tastings so we were over it and didn't feel like going through those motions again.
