Venue cancelled my date

Angela, on January 19, 2017 at 3:42 PM Posted in Planning 0 23

Need to vent! Due to circumstances that I totally understand (for anonymity I won't reveal too much) my venue informed me today that they cannot host my wedding for the planned day. A week later is available. Only vendor truly locked down is my rather expensive photographer and wedding planner. Save the dates were one week from being ordered and mailed. Just need to vent, and breathe. The city and surrounding areas are very beautiful, fairly expensive and desirable places. I booked 1 year in advance and dates were filling up. A lot of out of town guests have been making travel plans and many folks have already been saving that date. Most of our friends are in a career that requires lots of lead time in days off.

Just need stories of others experience with such a thing! I'm at a cross-roads - change the date or (try) to change the venue. I need a glass of wine.

I would be asking for a nice compensation, either discount or a free upgrade.

Did you sign a contract with them where the date was specified?

Pending hearing back from my photographer.

Yes, I did sign a contract. Only required to put a small deposit down at the time of signing which they would refund.

I don't understand if you booked 1 year in advance. Why they would cancel your date? And i agree with a PP, ask for either a discount or upgrade.

I also agree that you should be getting a discount of some sort. Sorry you are dealing with this! I am curious to know what their reasoning is for canceling your date?

Ahh need more info here. Why did they cancel on you? Are they offering you any type of incentive for you to move your date but stick with them? If it were me I would choose somewhere else for fear this would happen again...

If you signed a contract they should have to honor your date. If not, they need to compensate you greatly in order to move your date.

Is the venue doing some kind of construction or renovation that has been scheduled for your date?

More important city-wide event just scheduled that would truly make that day (and location) very miserable for a wedding (noise, crowds, parking, hotels). They are being super nice and reasonable and I'm an understanding person - there are bigger things than my wedding in terms of infrastructure and I could force the issue but it would suck. This particular venue will be heavily impacted, another in the same city would be alright, but less than ideal.

Think PAC12 schedule and a surprisingly better season than anyone anticipated last year = surprise big home game that was not anticipated. Ugh. And I'm a football fan.

It won't happen again the next week, this much I know so that date is safe.

So the venue cancelled your wedding because a football game was being played in your city? That's kinda BS for them. One of the biggest games of the year in my state city was played on our wedding day. It was fine. Just told people to allow for extra time due to traffic.

The location is gorgeous and beyond perfect in every other aspect (and shockingly inexpensive) - and not a wedding venue specifically so there were inherent risks. But still!

Basically, NowASeptMrs, yes. Venue very close to the game. It would genuinely be horrible. It's my hometown and I know those game days all too well in terms of mobility around the city.

Took a peek at your location, sorry, not trying to be creepy, just curious, because I had a feeling of what you were talking about when you mentioned all of the football stuff, and I was right with that hunch. Trust OP when she says it's horrible when a game is going on, because it is. As annoying as moving everything would be, I think it would be less of a headache than keeping your date. And it's going to be pricy for OOT guests on a game weekend too. Sorry I don't have much advice to offer!

You need a bottle of wine!!!

I had a similar issue. We are renting a large home at the beach. I called to let them know my lease agreement I signed and paid last June did note state the wedding would be held there. I was told that the property owner no longer allowed it due to damage from other hosted parties that summer. I called every manager for the rental company up and down the coast. Each one said they would get back to me. So that weekend I spent trying to find another event home the size I needed and with the indoor space. Nothing would go with the theme I wanted. This past Sunday I got a phone call. The got ahold of the owner and let them know I have been renting homes in the summer for years and have a good standing. They wanted a 3000 refundable deposit and I would be good. I called back later to see how they wanted it and they will just hold a credit card now.

I dodged a huge bullet there. But I name dropped with my photographer, florist and caterer knowing they work with them a lot.

Yes, veeismeee not creeped out at all! I'm glad you concur, it's pretty uniquely gorgeous and expensive locale, and worth it to have a more peaceful day in my opinion. Our goal is a great and headache-free party (well maybe hungover) for our friends and game-day would cause some true headaches. One of our hotel blocks raised our rate to $400/night last week *just in case* there was a game, ha!

Oh Kristin, that sounds like a mess! I am so glad it got worked out. If this is my biggest challenge as the planning continues I'll be happy Smiley smile
