Venue Cancellation

Lisa, on May 17, 2022 at 10:57 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 4

Wanted to see if anyone has experience with cancelling their venue and either figuring something out with their venue manager (cancel without a big penalty), selling their contract on Facebook, or any other methods where they didn't lose thousands of dollars..

Short story: my fiancé and I are really regretting not doing a smaller destination wedding like we had initially planned on doing (my mom and sister convinced us to do a bigger wedding close to home). We talked about looking into cancelling our venue and doing our initial plan of a smaller destination wedding.

We are 13 months away from our signed wedding date - if we cancel now to 180 days before our wedding we would lose 50% of the contract value (we paid 25% at signing and we owe another 25% exactly one year before the wedding date). I don't see anything in our contract about being non-transferrable so I think we could find someone to take our contract. We have seen people try and sell their wedding venues on Facebook - I'm just curious if this actually works and if people are actually interested in buying those. We would probably offer a $1000 discount on the venue as an incentive (way better than losing the deposit).

Definitely check with the venue on this to see if they'd be willing to let you transfer your deposit to another couple. If so, then you could certainly try to find someone else to take your wedding date at that venue! Otherwise, if that doesn't work out, another option could be to do a smaller destination wedding on an earlier date, and then using your current venue for a larger reception on the date listed in your contract.

We tried selling ours on Facebook and Instagram, and also had the venue re-open our date, so if any other couple toured and wanted our date we would transfer to them.
Neither of these worked out, we were stuck with our venue. I still hate it and it's been over 10 weeks since the wedding.i wish we would have just lost the money and made something else small work instead.

From about 10 months out until 4 months out. Then gave up so we could finish booking/planning things.

We did end up eloping (just us and our 2 officiants, and a photographer) 2 weeks before the day, and then started calling the "wedding" our Party. It helped a little to know that we were already married, and the party was just a party to celebrate that (we still did a ceremony, but I don't consider that the real ceremony and it was just to appease other people)
