Vendors are cancelling for my March 21st wedding

Meegan, on March 14, 2020 at 7:33 AM Posted in Planning 0 9
CoronaVirus has ruined my wedding. It began with my elderly parents doctor telling them to stay home, regardless. Then my sister/Maid of Honor cancelled b/c she has MS and an altered immune system. Next came some of the guests, and for the absolute demise, the reception venue cancelled. $50k and 13 months of planning. Exactly one week away from our wedding date. Everyone has been paid in full and some vendors are refusing to refund. Is this happening to anyone else?

The safety of our loved ones is definitely our priority but this is devastating and putting extreme stress on me and my fiancée.

I have the same date and I'm panicking! My guests are cancelling and my venue is playing chicken (essentially waiting for me to cancel so they don't have to refund me). I'm so anxious

I’m in shock. I’m spiraling into a depression, too. This virus has already taken a toll on our personal lives, but now with the wedding, it is causing strain on our relationship.

My husband and I are actually already married (we had our legal ceremony five years ago). So I'm okay emotionally with it getting cancelled I'm just so anxious about all the money it took to put this on and potentially loosing it all.

Deep breaths! We'll get through this. My FH and I went through something similar yesterday, but we were able to move vendors before it became a game of chicken because we knew we wanted the same plans, different day when everyone could attend. I would review your contracts and see if there's anyway they'd honor your payments on a different day. We managed to do that with all of our vendors, which is saying something. But they want your money. If they want to just cancel and keep your money, I would be prepared to get a lawyer and fight them. I'm so sorry this is happening to you, and I know words from an internet stranger aren't that comforting. But it will be ok. You'll still end up married, even in a tiny ceremony with just you two and an officiant. You'll be alright. Allow yourself to grieve - this is a rough time. And you will see the other side, married.

Meegan, I’m so sorry you are having to deal with this. It’s something none of us ever imagined when we dreamed of our day. Just take a deep breath, talk to the most important people in your life and figure out something that feels safe and happy for you. I know this is hard.

Check your contracts. If the vendor cancels, they need to refund. If they're still legally able to provide services, I don't believe coronavirus would count as the "act of god" or "natural disaster" type of event that would exempt them from a refund.

I'm so sorry this is happening. We are currently in a situation where our vendor refuses to give us back any money (not even willing to meet us halfway), even though there is a stay home, work safe order.... it's extremely frustrating!

Same here. We are fortunate that the most costly, chapel and reception venue, have given us a full refund; however, the vendors who are not out any money, bartenders, linen rental, videographers, are refusing a refund. We have lawyered up. I understand the florist, the caterer not refunding, but the vendors who are not out money? No. I will give them a chance to rethink their refusal, but I will leave negative reviews for them on wedding wire.
