Vendor dessert?

Private User, on February 15, 2015 at 1:06 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 12

I apologize if this has been addressed in the forum somewhere else, but I couldn't find it...so here it goes. I am planning to provide a meal to my vendors (we are having a food truck!) but I'm not sure if I'm supposed to provide them with dessert too. I have opted to go the route of cupcakes instead of a traditional wedding cake since my non-traditional catering choice makes cake-cutting a bit more of a challenge. Do I factor my vendors in to the cupcake count too? Or does this seem to fall into the "for wedding guests only" category?

If you are proving them with a meal, then why would you not provide them with dessert?

Gah! We are doing a food truck too! For mine - they can have dessert if they want it, but again we won't be plating it for them. Can I ask how you're planning on managing the truck line? That's my dilemma right now - dismiss by tables maybe?

You feed your vendors just as you would your guests.

The food truck I'm getting said they would be able to serve our estimated 100 guest count in 20-30 minutes. I am planning to dismiss by table, similar to how it would be if we had gone with a buffet. We will have 3 entree items for guests to choose from verses the truck's full menu, which seemed to be consistent with many of the other trucks I had considered. I'm also thinking about listing the options with descriptions on our wedsite so everyone will have an idea of what will be available and what they might like to order.

Everyone I have told about having a food truck at the wedding is excited about it!

In at least one of our contracts, it specifically required "the same meal provided to guests". They may or may not take dessert, but if you don't have enough available for them, do you really want to be the asshole that specifically has to say to them "no dessert for you!" I wold advise you to include them in your calculations, just so you don't have to worry about it the day of.

I'll also add that my DJ complimented our cake as the "best wedding cake he'd ever have", implying that it was pretty standard for him to get a slice at weddings. . . so, really, don't go out of your way to NOT provide dessert for your vendors. .. .

I talked to my sister who has some friends in the catering/banquet service industry and she said something similar to your response, Barbara. She said that often times when there are leftovers in regards to dessert the servers will partake, but that I probably wouldn't have to be sure to order an extra dozen or so cupcakes specifically for the vendors. In addition to cupcakes, we plan to have a dessert bar of sorts that will include cookies and bars, so there will definitely be plenty of options for treats.

I think there are bigger things to worry about, honestly.

Re: banquet/catering staff, they are a different story from your true vendors (DJ/Photographer/Videographer/etc)-- generally, the catering/serving/banquet staff is not provided any meal by the couple, while the other vendors would be.

I think that falls into the "for wedding guests only" category.

I honestly don't think you are obligated to provide dessert but check your contracts. Some of mine say to feed them the same as the guests and other say they need a hot meal and don't specify what that needs to be. I think its a nice gesture but I wouldn't stress about it

Vendor Meals are pretty standard but dessert is a bonus if offered.

I have to agree with Celia. There are bigger things for you to worry about. Your vendors aren't eating for pleasure. They're eating for stamina, and the other option is that they leave the reception to grab something at a drive thru. Honestly, they are viewing you wedding as a job, not a social function. Cake or dessert? They probably don't care. Truthfully, they want to finish and go home, just the way you want go home at the end of a work day. Don't worry about dessert. I honestly doubt they're thinking about it. Just provide them with a meal that will keep them going.
