Veil to cover your face? Too old fashioned?

Maybe I'm just too young but both my FMIL and my mom were shocked that I wasn't going to cover my face with a two tier veil to walk down the aisle. Honestly I'm not even sure I'm doing a veil at all. Do brides still do this? What's the reasoning behind it? I generally disregard what my mom says but...

    I'll wear a veil, but it won't be covering my face. It's just not my cup of tea.
