Vegetarian and vegan food ideas

yvonne, on June 5, 2017 at 4:43 PM Posted in Planning 0 35

Hello, i am getting married in June 2018 and i`m already thinking about the catering (maybe too early?). There is only one problem: My 80 guests almost all have some special food requirements. Some are on a diet, some are vegan, some vegetarian and some are Jewish and others are Muslims. I thought about a vegetarian catering and a few vegan dishes so all could eat together, but i`m still looking for more ideas. So here my main Question: What was the best vegetarian food you had at a wedding? Sorry for my English ( i am German ). I really appreciate your suggestions.

It may be more complicated if your Jewish friends follow kosher practices. I would clarify that first.

    Your English is fantastic!

I'm having asparagus risotto as my veg entree option. We did a tasting and it was to die for.

In my experience vegetarian food at weddings is usually terrible, the portions are smaller than the meat options and half the time there isn't a vegetarian option, so I frequently eat before or bring a granola bar.

As for suggestions, I don't know about religious dietary restrictions, but I think Mediterranean food would be really good. There are a lot of options and variety for both vegetarians and vegans.

@Powers that sounds delicious, I've been wondering what to do for veg options and totally going to look into risottos now

Thank you Powers2 Smiley smile , that sounds amazing!

Svetlana you are right, but my Jewish friends are just not mixing meat and dairy. Otherwise they do not keep kosher.

I think a huge stuffed portobello mushroom would be a satisfying vegetarian/vegan meal option.

I would definitely search for caterers who have a lot of experience working with different dietary restrictions!

I actually loved our vegetarian options! For the rehearsal dinner I ordered the veggie option because it was pesto gnocchi - yum Smiley smile The veggie entree for our wedding was an awesome sun-dried tomato risotto cake and it was my 2nd favorite entree at our tasting.

Pasta primavera was a hit at my sisters wedding. People were upset they ordered the meat options lol.

I had butternut squash ravioli once at a wedding and it was amazing! Agree with PP's- pasta options are good options!

I knew that Muslims do not consume alcohol, but when I worked with a few Muslims I learned they also don't eat any food that is prepared with alcohol, even if it's cooked out. For example a beef dish with a merlot sauce wouldn't be edible for them. Just FYI! I think there are other Muslim eating restrictions as well.

Double check with your caterers about the risotto. A lot of times it is cooked in chicken broth (which makes it not vegetarian).

We have several veggie options in our buffet (DH and I are both vegetarian along with several others). We did a pasta with marinara (vegan)0, tortellini with alfredo sauce, eggplant rollatini.

Quinoa stuffed peppers are always great as well.

I agree with Steph so please be sure to sample your veggie option to make sure it's delicious.

ETA- thanks for thinking about your guests dietary restrictions!

We're having a Ratatouille Tart and Spinach Empanada dish.

Talk with you're caterer. I'm sure they have done this kind of thing before. I was stumped about this also and had no idea what to ever consider, my caterer had a ton of fabulous ideas!

My vegetarian option is pasta with artichokes and sun dried tomatoes. Since I am a vegetarian myself, this is what I wanted to eat. Usually risotto is made from chicken broth, same reason I opted that one out.

I work for a photo company that shoots school events so I've eaten my fair share of food at wedding venues when I shoot proms and I actually just had an amazing vegetarian dish the other day. It was just eggplant parm but it was filled with ricotta and was so flavorful. It came with a side of veggies in a light alfredo sauce that was also amazing. I'd eat that again any day and I don't usually like Italian food.

This obviously would depend on the tastes of your crowd, but we went to a wedding last fall where probably half the guests were vegetarian or vegan, and the couple had an Indian buffet. It was phenomenal! I've never gone back for seconds at a wedding buffet before, but I sure did at this wedding!

I've been vegetarian for 8 years and actually attended a wedding when I was shortly vegan. The vegan dish was a Pasta Primavera with oil instead of a creamy sauce. I was honestly so happy that they accomodated me that I enjoyed it so much. At a few weddings I've had eggplant parm, and at one there was a dish filled with portabello mushrooms with mozzarella cheese and other grilled veggies (note both of these entrees are vegetarian but NOT vegan). I'd try to see if your caterer can do the pasta primavera (so simple but tasty!). I'm currently having the trickiest time with accomodating gluten free guests bc you have to make sure there's no gluten products in the marinades of meat and potatoe type dishes.

Thank you on behalf of vegetarians everywhere!

Sadly most weddings I've been to the veg option was total müll , however two stand out- one was a vegetable risotto and one was a grilled eggplant steak.

My mother always orders the vegetarian entrée. The last 2 weddings she attended they told her it would be one dish and then decided to change it; vegans and vegetarians got the same thing. At one she was promised mushroom ravioli, which she loves, and instead got something she had to use 4 squares of butter on, to even get half of it down. She said the worst thing is to get a grilled vegetable tower, after a vegetable soup, salad, and with a side of vegetables and starch - usually no protein.

I had over 11% of our guests request the vegetarian entrée and not all were vegetarians:

Stilton Risotto, Roasted Pear and Carmelized Walnuts

If you have a lot of dietary restrictions, I'd suggest having some meal options that double in purpose. For example - have the vegetarian entree also be vegan, have a meat entree also be gluten-free, etc as needed. Just a thought.

Indian and/or Mediterranean!! Loves! So delicious and simple. And I bet it wouldn't be hard to make sure things are kosher, as well. Mmmm... I'm hungry, now!
