Hi!

Has anyone had issues with USPS mailing invites back? I put our return address on the back of the envelope, because I thought it looked nicer, and we got about 20 of them sent back to us. USPS apparently scanned the back of our envelopes and used our return address as the "to" address. This seems so absurd to me. Has anyone had this happen or heard of this, if so, what did you do? Did USPS make you pay for postage to resend? I'm also a little irritated because now they are going to look pretty worn having to go through the mail twice, and I spent so much time on them...ughhh...also worried I'm going to get more back later...

I had a couple STDs returned to me for this reason. I can't remember if I repackaged them and sent again, or if i sent someone to the post office to make sure it's sorted in the right direction.

That's crazy! We have a return address stamp that we've used for christmas cards and things and I ALWAYS put it on the back of the envelope! I'm so sorry this happened! They should pay for the extra postage.

In your picture it doesn't look like the stamp was cancelled, so you can definitely use that again. I agree with another who said take it directly to the post office and tell them what happened. Maybe they can "hand cancel" them since it's only a small amount. Good luck!

O no!! I put my return labels on the back of my thank you cards so I wouldn't have to lick or tap them sealed!

This happened to us with one STD. There weren't any markings on it that indicated it was being returned to sender or that the address was invalid, so we assume it got flipped during sorting and went to the return address as though it was the mailing address. I hand cancelled them, so the back of our envelope didn't have the machine cancel mark on it.

We did have to slip it in a larger envelope and pay for new postage. Before resending, we also reached out to the GM it was intended for to verify we had the correct address.

You'd think the mailman would catch the issue when sorting to put them in your box.

We put our addresses on the back and didn't have any issues, but I've read about this happening to other people.

How annoying! I would go to the post office and speak with someone directly. Explain they are your wedding invitation and that you sent out x amount with no issues. Please update us OP, I am very interested as to why this happened and what they will do to fix it!

It really depends on your post office, but I have a friend who works there and basically (from my understanding) there's a machine that puts envelopes all facing the same direction, and having a return address on the back can confuse the machine. I don't know what the big deal is about putting it on the front and avoiding this issue, but I hope you can get it straightened out!

I'm sure that didn't happen because someone is new or didn't know what they were doing. Mail gets processed through the sorters and it looks like it was misfaced. If you could only see the thousands and thousands pieces of mail that come through on a daily basis. It's crazy! Sorry this happened to you. Just go to your local post office and have them rectify the problem.

You might want to go in. Maybe the manager on duty will mail them free of charge.

We used wraparound labels so I did some research prior to using them as this could happen in that scenario, thankfully we didn't even get one back.

USPS said we could just stick it back into the mailbox and you do not have to pay for postage a second time.

Make sure your font is smaller for your return address.

We did not put our zip code.

This is all based on how the envelope was fed into the sorter so unfortunately the computer doesn't know any better. Hand cancelling can't avoid this for you either since that is a separate process from sorting, as well. Honestly with yours the error should never have been an issue given that your address is on the flap. Gah! Someone was careless when feeding it into the machine. Smiley sad

Oh I forgot to mention, the computer reads your envelope "from bottom up" and goes with whichever address it reads first. So annoying :/

Oh no! I'm sorry you're having this issues OP and to some of you ladies. The postal service really need to re-train their people if this is because of human error. I didn't realized this could happen and I'm mailing our invites (with our names at the back of the envelopes too) next week..

I'm sorry this happened! How annoying. Clearly the person who scanned them didn't know any better.

You're so patient to wait till Saturday lol I would be on the phone with corporate explaining what happened so that when I go to the actual post office to send them back out I wouldn't have to deal with anyone. I am sure they won't charge you for postage since it isn't your error. It's an internal error and a big corporation like USPS will take responsibility for it I'm sure.

YES THIS HAPPENED TO ME WITH MY SAVE THE DATES. It was only one. When I put them in the mail box one was backwards, and that's how it scanned backwards! So go to USPS and have them sharpie out the barcodes on the bottom, and resend it. That happened with me yesterday actually! Smiley smile

It's really not that big of a deal, so no need to talk to the same person you saw to begin with. You just go in and have them sharpie the barcodes and resend.

They let me use the same envelope so I didn't have to pay for the extra stamp. Now I know for the future Smiley smile
