Using Antique China for Reception... Lead Concerns?

Kyndra, on March 11, 2020 at 1:15 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 9
Hello all!

I've been collecting antique China sets to use at my reception. I'm a worry-wort and I've been researching how antique China may contain lead if it was made before 1971... Should I be worried about this? I'm not going to use any dishes with crazing or excessive chips.
It's one meal and most websites I've seen say they would avoid using antique China for daily use.Thoughts? I already have collected about 150 antique place settings 😂

I think it should be ok. Especially I don’t know if you’d be able to even know if they were made before 1971?

Your guests will be eating the food, not the plates, so they will be fine. My comment was going to be about excessive chips/cracks, but it seems you've already taken care of that. It will be beautiful to have vintage china on your tables.

Yeah, I don't have a way of knowing unless if looked up every pattern 😂 I work at a nonprofit and we have a thrift store, so I've gotten amazing discounts on all of the sets I've collected.

Truthfully, I don't even know many people who would even think to be concerned about the lead. So long as you stick to your plan about chips/cracks, you'll be fine. I hope you share pictures of the turn out Smiley smile

It’s just one meal... I wouldn’t be concerned about it at all.

I would do lead testing on the plates. It's easy to do.

Just get lead testing kits and test each of them. There is a good chance that some have lead in them, yes. Don't take risks with other people's health.
