Use mom's veil?

Stefanie, on October 20, 2016 at 6:14 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 34

Hi ladies,

I have been following all of your posts since getting engaged in November and now need some advice. My mom offered me her veil to use for my upcoming May wedding. My mom got married in 1980, and the veil definitely has an 80's vibe with the large headpiece and fake flowers along the back brim of the headpiece. Thankfully the lace is very similar to my own dress.

Here's my question: should I use it or thank her and find a veil that is more current?

If I use it, it's really important to me that the veil work with the dress to complement each other and not have one or the other look out of place.

Thanks for your help!

I think it goes perfectly with your dress. The fact that it's your moms would out way if it matches or not it's the sentiment that counts! But that's just my opinion...

I think it looks good, and you don't have to wear it for the reception so I say go for it, it would be so special and mean so much to her.

Would she mind if you alter it for more updated look?

I think the lace trim look beautiful with your dress but the headpiece is too large.

I actually don't think it looks outdated. It matches perfectly and the fact that it has sentimental meaning is the cherry on top.

Vintage is in, I like it! However, if you want to alter it, I'd only change the headpiece for something more subtle.

It does not look dated at all! I would suggest try wearing it slightly higher on your head, almost like a Juliette style veil.

It goes great with your dress. Although if you're not really "feeling" it, maybe see if your shop can re-work it into something different.

Could you wear it just for the ceremony? I used some lace off my moms dress to wrap my bouquet. That could be an option.

I wish we could find my moms wedding dress still Smiley sad I wanted the lace so bad for my bouquet.

I wanted to use my mother's veil so badly, but i really didn't love it with the dress I chose.

I used a piece of her lace and had it sewn inside my dress. Not visible to anyone but I knew it was there and I loved it. Don't feel guilty if it doesn't fit your vision, you can incorporate it in other ways.

I'm with O&L, see if she minds changing the hairpiece to something a little smaller! Because other than that I think it matches perfectly!

I think the headpiece looks incredibly beautiful, and a lot like my grandmother's from the 1950s. I do think it would look better placed a bit higher on your head. But in the end, its you wearing it, so if you'd rather rework it into something a bit more modern, give it a try.

That veil is gorgeous with your dress. If you wanted to make it smaller so it's more modern, ok, but tbh I think it's fine the way it is
