Urgent. Need wedding dress in 6 weeks

Liz, on August 14, 2019 at 3:42 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 37

Long story short, I just tried out my wedding dress I had bought back in February ( Bought in China and at the time I was jetlagged and didnt realize my dress was too long). Since February a lot of events were going on like friends weddings, family events, family visit from out of country, ect. During this time I did not find time to try on the dress. Fast forward to this past weekend, I finally tried on the dress and found out it was way too long and after getting multiple advice in regards to if the dress can be altered, many said it would be hard to alter and if it was possible then the dress would lose its structure. So in the end I decided to go dress shopping again. This Saturday I will look around. Has anyone had an experiences with finding their dress a month before their wedding and having enough time to order the dress as well as alter it?

I been reading some post online and people were able to get it done in a month but that was with sample dress (which means they didnt have a wait time for deliver of the dress if it needed to be ordered). My problem is that im usually a size 0 in clothes ( XS, Bra size: 32B, Weight: 99 lb, Height: 5'2'') but sample dresses tend to be 6,8 and 10. I am starting to lose hope that this is possible.

Can someone who has been through something similar please share their experience or advice in this situation?

Theres only 6 weeks left until my wedding Smiley sad

Maybe you can think of alternatives like Lulu's or azazie?

One thing you could do would be to look online. A lot of women sell their wedding dresses after their wedding for a highly discounted price! One site is here https://www.preownedweddingdresses.com/used-wedding-dresses

No matter what, any dress you get will need alterations so it just depends on whether or not that is something you want. Personally, I would try to find a seamstress who specializes in wedding or even pageant gowns and have them alter your dress.

You may also be able to find a dress store like "Brides for a Cause" that sells pre-owned dresses

Do you have wedding consignment stores in your area? That's where I got mine. They will have a full range of sizes. And you can buy the dress and take it home the same day.

Yeah I looked on there but I didnt really find anything that stood out to me. I have ordered a bridesmaid dress from Azazie before. Typically takes at least 3 weeks to get it. Would also be cutting it close for alterations if needed . I find that even though Azazie has the custom size option I still need to alter my dress I got from there. Thanks for the suggestion thought. It did pop up into my mind Smiley smile.

Buy used from another bride much closer to your measurements. You’re going to pay a lot in alterations at the last minute unless you buy something that fits already. You might still need alterations but they’ll be easy and quick ones.
Bridal resale shops let you search by height and dress size.

Hi! Thank you so much for suggesting this site. Since I am rushed on time I'd like to physically be able to try on dresses to see how it looks on me. Because I am shorter and petite I feel like most of the time dresses in pictures/models look way different on me. For some reason the torso area on me is always too low. But thanks for suggesting this option Smiley smile. I have a bridal appointment with 2 bridal boutiques this Saturday so if I dont find any there I'll definitely consider this!

I forgot to add because of your size you might get a much better discount on your used dress because the smaller the dress, the less people can wear it. They are absolutely priced to sell! Bonus points if you’re 5’4 or shorter in your wedding shoes.

I looked into a few places. I live in Lake Forest, CA and found a boutique in Costa Mesa that sells sample dresses. I just called in and they said the seamstress can take a look at me in the sample dresses and determine if they can alter it to fit me. Most sample sizes I saw were size 8 or 10. But a friend just told me for normal size 0 in bridal dresses you can be size 4. Funny how that works

Poshmark has so many wedding dresses. I have a size 12 listed but that’s closer to a street size 6/8.

Bridal sizes are different than street sizes. I am also a street size 0, I bout an off rack dress that’s a bridal size 10, and I’m having it altered down to around a bridal 4/6.

What I’ve learned through this experience of having my dress taken down multiple sizes is that it can get expensive. It’s not just pulling in the sides... it’s opening up the front of the dress because it is covered in beading and lace ($$&dollarSmiley winking.

I would recommend checking out BHLDN, they should have dresses that can ship out quickly, I would also try to consult with someone at the shop that can give you a true idea on what alterations would involve for the dress you end up selecting.

I actually looked there too. Smiley smile I really like dresses by Rebecca Ingram and I saw a few I liked but wasn't sure about what my size for bridal dresses were. I think after my appointment Saturday I will have more of an idea what size I am in bridal dresses. Good to know that most time bridal dress sizes are bigger. Its been so hard to find bridal dresses in size 0XD

Yay I'm really actually really happy I am able to get a comment from someone with size 0 on approximate sizes! Would you mind sharing with me how much you spent on alterations? The sample dresses I saw at a shop in the OC (the county I live in) were around 500-800. My goal was to spend under 1500 for tax and alterations. Of course being realistic and knowing with such short notice I'll likely spend more than this. But if you wouldn't mind sharing alteration cost it would help me a lot!

My very best friend got a new dress roughly 10 days before her wedding. She bought a dress that she decided she hated so we went shopping again. She is plus size so she didn’t get “off the rack”. She got it all done at David’s bridal. (Not where her original dress was from). They were able to get the dress in, do alterations, and add on cap sleeves. I have no idea how much it cost but I’d guess it wasn’t cheap. But it is possible!!! Good luck😀😀

No problem! Also know that it’s better to go bigger rather than smaller. From an alteration point of view it’s easier to take something in then letting out!

    Best of luck!

I purchased the essence of Australia D2029 off rack in great condition (seamstress doesn’t think anyone but me has ever worn it which is debatable). I bought it for $1000, and will probably end up spending $1200ish on alterations once it’s said and done.

That being said, it’s a strapless mermaid dress and it needs to fit well to look good. I’ve also allowed her to do some additional things that I could have done without. If you look up the dress you will also see the top half is covered in beading. I think if you stay on the more simple side, alterations will be easier (less expensive!) keep us updated!!

Thanks so much for sharing your friend's experience. I actually have David's bridal as my very last stop on Saturday just in case I do not find anything during my first 2 appointments at the other boutiques. Personally I think boutiques have much more detail for David's Bridal. But I like the range of sizes for Davids. I also heard alterations at David's are overpriced compared to other places Smiley sad.

Yes! Generally I agree with you!! We did the same thing for her, ended at David’s bridal. They were the only ones who could guarantee the 10 day turn around haha so we didn’t have much choice. You so have a bit more time so hopefully

Wow 1200 on alterations alone! But with beading it makes sense. The dress I bought in China has beading AND lace. But in reality the bottom is the main problem. I was told I can just carry the dress to keep it from dragging but the dress has 6-7 layers and is heavy. I'd probably be so grumpy that day if I had to do that and I'm sure it would show in pictures Smiley xd . I attached a photo of my dress that I currently have. Its beautiful (not to mention it only cost 125 USD since it was bought in China), but the problem is the lace pattern is GLUED to the tulle layer. It isn't sewed. If it was sewed it would be easier but because its glued it can damage the lace.

I went to david’s bridal and the sample size they had for my dress was a 4, so there are some smaller sizes

I may have a dress for you. You're the same size as my cousin. She wore it JUST for the ceremony. It's really beautiful and I could ship it to within the week. Let me know if you're interested! Here are some pictures. It's definitely not a super traditional dress, but it's beautiful!
