UPDATE IN COMMENTS Nervous about picking up engagement ring

Pancakes, on June 5, 2014 at 2:28 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 30

LOOONG story- He proposed October 31, 2013. We picked out the ring in April and the lady refused to size my hand. She said she can just look and see the size. So I got my ring and I had to have it re-sized, because the lady refused to get my correct size. I received it and the center stone was off center and some of the halo stones were crooked. I went to take it in to be fixed because a stone fell out in the 2 month mark. They said they wouldn't fix it because "no one will notice except for you" so they wouldn't fix it. I went in just for the purpose of asking them to fix the mistakes. This was a $7k ring, so I was not settling for crooked. They gave it back to me and just added gold dots to the empty space from the center stone and they did not polish the gold added to another part, so it was a dull gray. Then a second stone fell out. This last time I dropped my ring off on March 14th. They told me that my center stone had a giant chip in it. I could feel it with my bare hands. This was not there the week before, which was before I dropped it off the last time at the other location. So I believe they chipped it and gave it back to me. So they tried finding a new stone. The head repair person said he refused to fit it because the ring was so effed up from the other store. So they sent it off site to the “big guns” to fix it. Like 3 weeks after that, they told me my ring was ready and perfect. I went back and the ring was not fixed, just smoothed over a little more. So, now they just called me today that it’s ready, and I’m SUPER nervous. We have been engaged for 7 months and Jareds has literally had my ring more than I have. I would forget what it looked like, but I have pictures of it on my phone that I have to keep showing people. I had to try on dresses my first time without it. I don’t know. I’m ranting. But I’m nervous. Just wanting to get that out. Thanks.

I can understand why you're nervous - you might need to put on your bitch pants when you go there. For that much that ring should be sparkling and perfect the FIRST time you pick it up. Good luck! Let us know what happens...

Wow. That is awful. Yeah "He went to Jared's" but then she had to go again and again and again. Not only should it be fixed for that price, but they've been doing this for a while.... come on people. So sorry once again, that's truly terrible.

Ughh I sort of know what you are going though! FH and I got engaged in December, and I have lost 2 of the stones on the band since then. However, my ring came from Shane Co., and both times I went in to have it fixed, they were super nice and fixed it up perfectly. The second time I came in, they went over every side stone and added extra gold to make it more sturdy so that I would not loose stones as easily.

I'm sorry you've had such trouble with with your ring! Hopefully it comes back right this time, but if not maybe take it to a different jeweler and then send the bill to Jareds?

I would have contacted corporate and fought through this one. That is not acceptable.

That is ridiculous - I would have walked out at "I'm not sizing your finger." They sound totally unprofessional. You should report this to their corporate office.

I did contact corporate. Corporate would not help me other than telling me to take it into the store. It took 3 corporate calls (and 4 trips to the first Jared's location) before they allowed me to take it to another store. They let me take it to the new store in March. And they've had it since then.

Originally, he was supposed to get the "Get Set in Diamonds" rewards, or whatever it was. It was on sale so he should have gotten a few hundred off. But the lady said it was discontinued and since it needed to be custom made, he couldn't get the deal, so in turn she waived all custom fees. Well, I later find out from corporate that it was not a true custom piece. They had the setting in the store and added the stone, which is not custom because they didn't make it, they had it already sitting in the repair department because it was discontinued from that store. So it wasn't custom. So the lady also ripped us out of hundreds. Corporate wouldn't give us money back and said they could make work strings to give us an even exchange if it can't be fixed, but that would be it. And if we picked something less, we would lose that money. So this time is was actually custom.

Meanwhile, the exact setting is sitting in the case at a local jeweler and is in perfect condition and cheaper. It was killing me!

And it was actually much worse and longer than I said. Don't want to spill out everything and bore everyone. But yeah, just antsy and had to get it out.

That is really odd have you tried calling corporate? I would have walked out and not bought the ring at the "not sizing your finger". Anyway we had a terrible experience with Zales and Jared's actually fixed their eff up and I love the ring I have now. I really am surprised I love our Jareds. Try calling corporate seriously!

Wow I think I would be having serious issues with the whole thing already. I hope it's right and fixed when you get there.

Oh heeeelll no. I'd be PISSED! I hate giving up my ring for the time it takes for them to clean it on the spot. Or when they had to make my wedding band and engagement ring sit flush together, which was like a week.

I'd be going above them and talk to someone higher up about this entire experience. That is not okay. Especially spending that kind of money on it.

I hope you get to have your ring back, in perfect condition, today!

No ring. I drove the 45 minutes one way to the Jewelers. My ring has rounded prongs, this had all squared prongs. The center diamond stood higher than mine did. And my band thickness was 2 mm at the sides and 1.4 mm at the bottom. They gave it to me at 2.5mm all around. They kept trying to push it on me to keep it. But it won't match my band that we bought as a matching set. That wedding band is literally what the side stones are supposed to look like. So it wouldn't match at all. They are seeing if they can do anything and getting back to me Monday. So yet again I'm going dress shopping with no ring, and I'm having to postpone any engagement photos. I don't even have one of us together with the ring. Only of my hand. It's been 7 months and no picture together because I haven't had the ring long enough to take one...

Wow, I would see if you can contact an ombudsman or something that carries some weight.

Make them give you all your money back, so you can buy the one from the other jeweler!

No one has the right to screw a customer around like that.

I'm sorry that didn't work out, after everything else!! That's crazy they would try to give you a different ring. I'd be so angry!

Consult a lawyer. I guarantee that a letter on a law firm's letterhead vowing to sue will get their attention. Send it to the store and the corporate office. Also, threaten to trash them on social media. Nothing worse than bad PR.

I've never been a fan of corporate jewelry stores. I have always gone to Mom and Pop stores. I am actually am faithful to one jeweler. They get to know you and they will fix a lot of small things for free. Plus I get awesome discounts on jewelry.

Oh my...I'm so sorry. I'd be calling everyone I could think of. I'd be demanding my money back. I don't know how far you want to go, but I'd bet one of your local news channels has a consumer help segment. Once they start getting some bad publicity, I bet things would happen quickly.

    Consult a lawyer.

But, the quickest way to get a response is tostart a social media campaign. Tweet, Facebook, and Instagram pictures of what they have done. That is insane and they should be held accountable.

As soon as the corporate pr team sees this, they will solve it. Corporate customer service doesn't have clout but the PR team definitely does. They will do anything to make a publicly unhappy person go away.
