Unity ceremony...what are people doing??

What are people doing (if anything) for that portion of the ceremony where people typically light a unity candle or have mixing of different color sands? I pretty much only have the internet and TLCs "Four Weddings" to go off because I haven't been to a wedding in soooo long!

We are doing the sand ceremony. FH's cousin sent us some 'sand' from is hometown in ME & we are pulverizing a brick that was part of my family's old, WI farmhouse.

Are you guys playing music during your unity ceremonies? My DJ just messaged me asking for a song but I didn't know that was a thing

No one needs to make a trip to Hobby Lobby. Sorry. Had to.

We're doing a lot of glass frit pourings and a lot of variations on sharing wine/toasts to the guests (with tequila, wine, bourbon, beers....) and handfastings seem to be coming back raging hard.

IF the reading going along with it doesn't tie it in with your ceremony and your story, it's really kinda pointless...

Don't stuff something into your ceremony at random; the whole ceremony is a unity ritual when it comes right down to it. If there is something that speaks to you, include it, but random ritual elements ring hollow.

@Celia...I am not trying to "stuff something into [my] ceremony", just wanted to see what people were doing and if there's something that would fit for me and my fiancé...if anything at all. If you're not in to it, that's fine. But there's no need to be so critical to those who are. Thanks!

I think we're going to plant a small tree and each add soil from our childhood homes. Mine will probably be more of a mix from a couple places, but same idea

Unity painting. You get a blank canvas and pour 2 colors of paint over it at the same time. Like the sand but with paint. Then you can hang it on a wall instead of trying to find a shelf to put it on.

I"m sorry, I didn't mean to sound critical, and I love our unity rituals WHEN they speak to the actual couple. The sand from childhood places, paint for an artistic couple, chocolate for chocolate lovers....those are things that are meaningful to the couple. I've written tequila sharings, black and tan pourings, variations of religious/cultural traditions like the seven steps and broom jumps. One of my couples this weekend had wishing rocks, the couple today is doing a God's Knot.

We do a lot of sand for couples with children; we pick colors that express each child's personality, and use black and white for the parents (appropriate colors for protection, nurturing). It's a great addition, and I ask the parents to include charms for each child and shake the sand every year to morph the pattern as the family evolves.

It's when couples just stick something in because they feel they need something that it really makes no sense and it sounds as hollow as it is.

We are doing a wine ceremony! If you don't know what that is, basically you write a letter to your significant other, hopes & dreams for your marriage, future plans, why you fell in love with them... etc. And you pick out a bottle of wine and get a nice wine box and you put both of your letters inside it with the bottle. On your 5th anniversary, you open it up have a glass of wine and read the letters. And then replenish and close it back up until your 10th. Or even, if you find yourself struggling in marriage... you can open it up and read the letters to remind each other why you got married in the first place.

FH are big wine fans and he is a very talented writer. We really liked the idea!

We did a unity glass ceremony because we loved the idea of getting a blown sculpture back made from the pieces of broken glass we poured together at the ceremony.

Unless you're doing a cultural/religious one, it's just an unnecessary fad that makes the ceremony longer than it needs to be, IMO.

We're doing unity glass. Similar to sand ceremony but after we blend the colors, a local glass blower will make it into a bowl or vase.
