unity candle in church

Ashlee, on August 22, 2013 at 1:49 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8

So i went and booked my church ceremony and then do not do unity candles. are you having a unity candle lighting in your church? my church told me that they will give us a blessing to read at the reception for a unity lighting there..ive never heard of that! i aways thought the unity candle was done in church and that every church did it. ive never been to a wedding that didnt have a lighting at the church and have it at reception!

We're having a Catholic wedding and unity candles are not a traditional part of the wedding ceremony. Our priest left it up to us and we opted not too. I just feel like the whole "unity" thing (beyond vows) has become exceedingly gimmicky with everyone trying to come up with the next "original" idea and I'm over it completely.

We didn`t do a unity or any lighting of a candle during our church ceremony. Like Paris I`m not a big fan of these whole unity things.

Our priest didn't object to our lighting of the candles. We had a catholic ceremony. As they played the ave maria song we lit them up. It was actually really pretty. Let's be real .. your "Donation" should cover that its not like your asking for something outrageous

Catholic ceremony...unity candles are not part of the ceremony, and my priest doesn't like them either. I find it kind of redundant too because the whole wedding ceremony is about unity.

ETA: and like Paris said about the gimmicky thing...I was told the unity candle became really popular after it showed up on a soap opera in the 80s. That was even more reason for me not to do it.

I had a couple who insisted upon a unity candle at their outdoor ceremony. I told them in advance that it would not stay lit (wide open golf course). When they finally gave up trying to get it lit, I told them to light it in their reception and gave them the reading for it.
