Unhappy Makeup Trial!! - FOLLOW UP!

Follow Up Below w Pics!!

Yesterday I had my makeup trial done at my house. The MUA was referred by a cousin of mine who used her for her daughter's prom last year. Her makeup was beautiful!

I showed the MUA pics of what I liked....kind of the Carrie Underwood look. I also told her that my hubby prefers more natural looks for me and I do wear makeup on a daily basis so I want to look different fromt day-to-day but not overdone.

The MUA mentioned using plum. I told her that plum is actually one of my wedding colors so she went with it. When I saw the finished product I thought it was too much but I figured it was only because I wasn't used to it. I had a totally dark eye...plum and a smoked grey. When my hubby got home and saw me, he actually thought I was playing a joke on him! Needless to say....hw didn't like it and I knew he wouldn't cause he prefers less. I want him to like the way I look on OUR day!

I'm torn....do I look for a new MUA? Or call her and say I didn't like it?

I would call and explain that it was a little darker than what you were envisioning for your wedding day and that you would like something more subtle. See if she can do another trial run just to be sure.

Get another trial and ask for a more understated look. I had more than one trial - with the same artist. You just have to communicate what you want and if you've not worked with her before it's sometimes hard to get it right on the first try.

If you looked at it and thought it was too much then it was too much. If it looked "natural" I don't think you would have thought that in the first place, but I know it's difficult to gauge sometimes when you are not used to wearing a lot of makeup. Tell her after considering it a bit you decided it was not the look you were going for-she can adjust things. Also, maybe stay away from the plum, I don't see how that could look natural. She can't fix it if she doesn't know that you don't like it. Carrie Underwood has worn both of the looks below, if you went for plum maybe she thought you'd like the darker eye. Give her a second shot and if you still don't like it, find someone else.

Communication. Maybe find inspiration pictures, I've seen a bride on here show her makeup artist that and the artist nailed the look.

My MUA offered me a second trial for free if I decided that I didn't like my makeup, even after I got home from my trial. I didn't use it, but it's worth asking yours if she'll offer the same. Your MUA wants you to look perfect on your day and wants you to feel great, so more than likely she'll be really accommodating. Have her take before and after pictures so you can see how it looks on camera. My MUA told me that it may look "too dramatic" in a mirror, but you want your makeup to show up in your photos so you need to go a bit darker for your wedding. Here's my before and after picture - in the mirror it was hard for me to get used to and I thought it was too much, but on camera I feel like it's exactly what I wanted. For the record, I asked for natural with a touch of glam.

I wouldn't jump straight to a new MUA. You have to try communicating what you would like. Another MUA might have the same issue. Also, I would sit down with your fiance and show him your inspiration pictures. That way you kind find something that is a middle ground for both of you.

I didn't like my first makeup trial, so I explained what I didn't like about it, sent in more pictures, and they offered me a second trial for free. I am totally in love with the second hair and makeup look! Just talk to them.

Yeah girlfriend, totally agree with the above comments. This MUA wants your rave reviews and should be accommodating to help get you exactly what you want. When you're happy, she wins too! Communicate your thoughts for sure.

@kelly, your MUA is amazing! and that is so true. My photographer did the same with my makeup for an old photoshoot. In person I thought I looked retarded, but it was dark enough for the look in the pictures.

If I was a MUA and you told me you wanted a Carrie Underwood make up style, I would think you wanted something dramatic

Thanks for all your advice! She is actually not a MUA full-time she does this on the side however, she grew up modeling and having makeup put on her so she knows what will look good for the camera. I just want to make sure I am comfortable for our BIG DAY! I know that Carrie Underwood tends to have a more dramatic eye look but maybe I just wasn't expecting the plum to be so in my face? I know that sounds crazy. Maybe I will tell her to go more towards earthy tones. I also felt like you could actually see some makeup that wasn't blended too well. I had mentioned this to her and she did fix it. I don't know...I am very INDECISIVE and on an everyday basis, I wear MAC but I do not go crazy with it and I definitely know that I like for my skin to look even and blended. I just want to look perfect...who doesn't?? Our wedding is outdoors in a park and the last thing I want is to not look like myself. In the pictures it doesn't look bad but I really didn't even feel comfortable in my own skin.

I think it looks really nice! Go a little lighter come wedding day if you want.

I never ever wear make up and I looked a bit goofy with a full face of make up. My fiancee told me that he knows its one day that I have a full face of make up and that it is part of the whole hair done, make up on, dress, veil, wedding day look.

Tell your fiancee to be gentle :-)

I personally think what she did on you is exactly what you described to her. That is 100% what I would have envisioned with you telling her you wanted Carrie underwood. I think an issue youre gunna run into is you want something slightly dramatic and your FH wants really natural. I would not go with a different mua I think you just need to tell her your original thought ended up being too dramatic for you.

Also a reminder: your make up has to be heavier than usual in order to look right in the pictures, you're also going to be outside in a park with people hugging you and it more than likely being warm and sunny out. You don't want it to melt off or not be noticeable.

    Thanks!

One of the things I love about him is that when I need him to be honest he will be. I must have made him sound horrible in my original post! LOL

Oh wow Jessica, I think it looks gorgeous! For pictures you're really probably not going to want to go too much lighter than that, to be honest. But if it feels too dramatic, yeah, totally switch out the plum for a more neutral color. Best wishes!

Thanks Randi! I thought it looked ok in the pics but I felt unrecognizable when I looked in the mirror. :-(

I think it looks beautiful. I think like the others said, if anything just tell her not quite so dramatic.

It's pretty Jessica, and I'm also working with plum/purple. MAC did my trial (but their was a messy appt. situation on their part) so I'm not sure if I'm changing MUA altogether or what. I did love their colors-including a purple eyeshadow palette so I'm torn. I think you should be fine once you communicate with your current MUA.
