Undergarments for strapless ballgown

NowMissyL, on December 13, 2010 at 3:16 PM Posted in Planning 0 19

Hi ladies,

Okay so while looking for undergarments for my wedding dress, I've come across a bazillion and one different types of bras, not-bras (you know, the things that stick to the skin (nu-bras or something), corsets, bustiers, etc. Pretty much I was wondering if anyone knows what's good, bad, great and ugly, etc. Any help or advice would be great! I've attached a pic of the gown I tried on (mine in my size won't be coming in until January and I'll post that pic when I try it on. Excited!) so that you can get something of an idea of what I'm working with. The clamps she put on the back to hold it up kept popping off, that's why I look like I'm holding it up with my arms in the first pic...because I am! lol Thanks!

I didn't wear any sort of bra with mine. My dress wasn't letting anything go anywhere!

I have a strapless dress and a rather large chest, but I've found the built in corset is enough for me so I don't need a bra or separate corset.

When your dress comes in, just ask them what they have to try it on under the dress. Most dress shops have several different styles of bras and corsets to try on with the dresses. This will give you a better idea of what you want/need.

I got mine from Lady Grace: http://ladygrace.com

they're mostly on the eastern side of the states so you'd have to email/call. i'm sure if you sent a picture & bra size they could help ya out. or they could help refer to you a store closer to you.

I had bought a long line bra from the bridal shop I bought my dress at but I was pretty uncomfortable in it! The built in boning in my dress and the fact that it fit well made me decide not to wear a bra at all. I did end up buying these things that look a little like chicken breasts (LOL!) that stuck to my skin, just so that I'd feel like I had something between me and my dress and to add a little shape (since I'm smaller chested). But you gotta do what you are comfortable with!

Yeah, I think those are the nu-bra things. Did they stay well throughout the night? Way back in my senior prom days I wore a strapless gown and "paper" bra cups thingy (link below)...which was pretty horrible. They didn't stay on well and I ended up taking them off about an hour after I stuck them on lol. I'm curious about the "chicken breast" bra Smiley winking but I don't think that is something you can try on since I'm pretty sure they are adhesive.

I wore just a regular ole' strapless from Vicki's and was all right in it. I too bought a longline bra and hated it. I've worn the sticky cups (that's what I call them) and they were all right for the event (a dinner with minimal dancing) but I wasn't impressed with them they didn't give a lot of support but maybe they work well for smaller chested gals (36C here)

I already own a long-line bra that is very comfortable (I do a lot of entertaining and wear a lot of party dresses). So I plan on wearing that, because I have a bit of a tummy to hold in and my dress does not have boning in it. If that's not an issue for you, you could ask a seamstress to sew cups into your dress.

I think I got my chicken breast inserts from Sears also (or maybe it was JC Penney) but they were not made from fabric, more like silicone or gel like, so they didn't have stickers, they just kinda molded to your skin. They didn't slip or move around and you can wear them with anything or even inside a bra. If you bought the ones I'm talking about, you could still return them because they don't have a sticker that would get used.

Target has the chicken cutlets too. Smiley smile I think they are around 15-20 bucks. I bought them once but think I had the wrong size so I returned them.

I have those chicken breast thingies, and I think they are the "nu-bra" that you are talking about, Missy! Mine is called a Free bra. They stick to your skin and clasp together at the front. The boutique where I bought my wedding dress from told me I "needed" them, but I can't get them to work. The box says they are supposed to squeeze your breasts together and lift them up - uh.. how?? They just hang there with chicken cutlet things stuck on! I'm definitely going to look into other options. I paid about $12 USD for them. Maybe I'm doing it wrong... Any helpful instructions, Konichiwa?

Im just going with a normal strapless.

your dress looks like the back comes up high enough that you dont need antything that comes down lower than normal.

Also, it looks you only need a corset type thing if you want the look of it. often those are worn to pull women in a bit, but I doubt you need it. especially since you will have plenty of time to get it altered properly.

though, since you arent getting married till 2012, i wouldnt even bothered beginning to try and alter it until much closer to the wedding. So, Id say go pick up the dress and put it on and get a feel for what kind of support you may need/want

No definitely not lol. That would be unwise to have it altered now.

And LOL L.Turtle! "The box says they are supposed to squeeze your breasts together and lift them up - uh.. how??" Yeah, I was kind of wondering how they were supposed to work, also.

    Thanks ladies!

I am looking in to the nu-bra or whatever it's called :p since I am smaller chested and could use a little extra...

At the very first bridal shop I went to, the consultant raved about them... says every girl in the shop owns a pair.. She even said that one girl is a salsa dancer and wears them under her costumes for dance. She says that the dancer was amazed at how well they stay on and everything. So I am definitely checking in to one of those

Is it possible mine are just too big? I'm definitely no bigger than a C, more like a B and a half, but I haven't been measured in ages so I really don't know. The woman at the bridal shop guessed B, and that's the size I purchased. I would think the larger your breasts, the less this will work.
