Ugh - Wedding Dress Blues

Jennifer, on July 2, 2020 at 12:25 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 23

I bought my dress earlier this year and haven't tried it on since (I'm keeping it at my parents house), I tried it on today and I don't like how it fits me. I think the dress is really pretty, but I feel ugly in it. I look frumpy. It could just be that that is my body type, but I'm feeling like crying. I want to find a more casual dress to change into immediately after the ceremony and some photos.

Did/does anyone else feel ugly in their dress?

This is the dress. My torso is really short, so I imagine thats why I look frumpy. But, ugh...I don't even want to wear it anymore.

That is such a beautiful gown. does it perhaps need any alterations?

I don't know if it does. It seems pretty snug. It's mostly near the top that bothers me. Maybe the boob area needs to be taken in because that's where it feels frumpy.

It’s a beautiful dress! I would take it to a seamstress and discuss alterations. That may help greatly. However, I’m sure you look gorgeous!

Oh no! I actually think the dress is stunning. I can also see how it might make certain body types look frumpy. I honestly think this would be an easy fix, though. Try to consult a seamstress to discuss some alterations as she would have suggestions for you. Not sure if you'd be interested, but you could cut the mesh and make it into a sweetheart neckline, or add a petticoat/crinoline skirt for the bottom. It also might help to add a small jeweled belt. I think you can do a variety of different things to transform it into something so love, so multiple options are a huge plus. We would love to see photos of it on you because there's no way it's that bad. I'm sure you look beautiful! Good luck!

I LOVE IT! Not frumpy whatsoever! You're being too critical on yourself. Don't pick the dress, or yourself, apart as you said yes to it for a reason. It's so flattering and elegant. Maybe it'd help bring back that spark if you would play dress up and do your hair/makeup, and maybe even throw on a veil, because it would show you what you'll look like the day of.

Maybe I'm comparing myself to the model. I think the boob part is making me feel frumpy. Maybe I should order those stick on bras and see if that makes a difference.

I can guarantee you that even the model doesn't look like herself in those pictures. You look great, everything is in the right place and you will look even better on your wedding day with your bridal glow!

I think you look fabulous! I felt much better about my dress once it was altered. The bodice and a few other places needed to be taken in, I didn't feel like me, until the seamstress worked her magic.
Your dress is beautiful! Just needs to be altered, that's all! You will see! It's just hard to picture in your mind, but it will change everything ! Hugs to you!

Definitely not frumpy! Take it to a seamstress and see what they may be able to do to alter it to make you feel a little better

No need to compare yourself to the model. I understand what you're saying, though. Try to look on Amazon for the sticky bras as I have tried many of them (I'm a DDD so finding ones that work is so difficult), but I finally bought a D on Amazon for $7 (I figured it was too good to be true) hoping it'd work and it's hands down the best strapless bra I've ever owned, even over Victoria's Secret. It's just silicone and clips in the middle, but I've worn it at least 30 times in blazing hot weather where I sweat profusely (it has survived graduations, workouts, weddings, dancing, etc.) , and it's just now starting to give out. With the others I tried, I could barely get them to last one wear before they were falling off due to sweat, lack of adhesive, etc. The Amazon one doesn't budge. If that's the route you decide to go, I can send you the link to the one I'm speaking about above if necessary. Wishing you luck and happiness!

    1. You look wonderful in your dress. And honestly, I haven’t met many people who didn’t need their dress altered in one way or the other. I haven’t tried mine on since I bought it and quarantine gave me a few extra pounds.
    2. Never compare yourself to the model. They have a whole team there doing all this extra nonsense plus photoshop after the fact.
    3. My bridesmaids and mom hated my dress on the model but loved it on me. They didn’t even want me to try it on and were thrilled at first when they couldn’t find it in the store.
Just remember to be kind to yourself when you are trying it on in isolation. Your lighting is different from the store. You will have hair and makeup and accessories on the big day to make you feel even more amazing than you already are.

I will link the bra below. Prices are constantly fluctuating, but they usually remain between $7-$10.

The boob part of my dress was also weird and my dress didn't give me a waist, but with alterations and boob pads. It looked fine. I think its common to have dress regret. Maybe go see a seamstress. They can pin your dress up so you can visualize how it will look. I went through the same thing though. I'd say do what is best for you and will make you feel comfortable.

If its worth anything. I really love the dress. I'm a fan of sleeves.
