Uber/Lyft for wedding party?

Spaghetti, on July 5, 2017 at 9:31 PM Posted in Planning 0 19

Has anyone used/planning to use Uber or Lyft for transporting themselves and maybe the wedding party from ceremony to reception? I haven't use either service myself, only with others who set it up when I was in the city. We are getting married near Chicago so we know it's in the area. I'm just interested in it as a substitute for a limo. The guests will have shuttle service with their hotel.

I'm considering using Uber Events for my OOT guests. The hotels nearby don't do shuttles, so I'd like to provide at least enough credit for them to get to/from the venue.

We're also considering using Lyft. It would be a lot easier and cheaper. We might still get a limo to take the bridal party after the reception.

I'm considering it for my old people. They'd be uncomfortable driving that late so it's easier on them and us.

Yep, i'm getting uber blacks for us from the hotel to the reception. it literally made no sense to me why i would spend SO much money on a limo for like, a 15min car ride.

The boys are using uber to get to the church. We'll have a party bus the rest of the day. I love uber/Lyft!

I'm most interested in using it for my fiancé and me. Trying to cut costs but not at the guests' expense...

Great idea. Might suggest that as a way for me to get to the ceremony. I didn't think me and my dress would fit in a car.

    @SaraJ -

Have you used it before? Can you explain it more? I looked it up but I still have questions!

So I get that you set an amount, and if guests go over, they pay for the outstanding fee/difference.

And since we don't like guests to pay for anything, we'd probably set a high limit, right? If they don't use all of it, do we get that extra money back or is just gone?

Do you know? Does anyone know? Really curious.

If this is cheaper than a hotel shuttle, then I'd like to set this up, but also worried I won't set a high enough limit and the guests will end up paying extra

(Our hotel is offering shuttles for $100 roundtrip for 11 people per shuttle (So 2 shuttles will be $200, etc.))

This isn't for us though. It'd only be for guests staying at the hotel, who need a ride to & from our venue.

We used uber in Vegas. I contemplated getting a limo but it really didn't make sense. We took uber from the hotel we stayed at to the hotel the ceremony was held.

I've used both and have had great experiences with Uber. I've had some shady Lyft experiences. You can request an Uber XL if it's available (usually in busy areas/ cities), and that will get you a large SUV. If you can, I'd suggest doing a test run. In some areas, like NYC, you get nicely maintained, clean cars that belong to a limo service, and in others, you get cars that you may not want to ride in for your wedding (dirty, no AC, etc.).

I've never used an uber or lyft. Though I would much prefer something like this than a limo! I would love to hear other's experience using this (..while in full wedding wear). Following Smiley smile

Yes, we will be using Uber. We live in NYC and we don't have a car, and a limo just seemed SO unnecessary. If there aren't any taxis around, we'll just take an Uber.

Seems like a good idea! I would do the Uber Black though. Uber XLs can sometimes be SUVs other times they are mini vans, not exactly wedding-chic lol.

I'm planning to use Uber Black for our (me & FH) transportation. But I have a long driveway and If I can't figure out how to get them to pull into my driveway I will consider using a private town car that usually performs airport shuttle rides. That's my next option.

I'm interested in learning more about this as well. I'm kind of Uber-ignorant. With Uber Black can you request a pickup location/time? Or do you have to hope one is in the area? Same with Uber Events, do you just hope an Uber is in the area for your guest or do they send a few cars that way? We aren't getting married in a big city but we aren't getting married in nowheresville either. I'm worried about if there will be Ubers available.

We used uber for my best friends wedding in NYC. It was just she and I and it worked out mostly. The uber driver from the first look location to the ceremony was a jerk so we ended up getting out and taking a yellow cab, but it was pretty fitting for our friendship and a great memory, lol.

If you set up an Uber Event there will be an alert to drivers that will push them in the direction that you have specified people will be coming from/going to. The way the app works is it pushes drivers to areas that are projected to get high volumes of requests, so setting up an event basically creates a "push" for them and direct them to that area. I read on their website you can set up the reservation 30 days in advance. So that would be to use it for ceremony to reception.
