Types of Soda for reception - need opinions!

sweller15, on May 12, 2015 at 9:36 AM Posted in Planning 0 10

MIL is planning to purchase some 2 liters of soda for the reception and called yesterday to ask my opinion on how many and what flavors. I can find all kinds of drink calculators for alcohol, but not much for soda. She said she was thinking she would buy 100, and if more is needed the bartender can get some, but it will be like $2.5/bottle instead of $1.50/bottle if we buy ourselves so I think 100 will be fine and if not, hopefully we won't need too many more at the high price. Anyway, we are debating on how many coke, cherry coke, rootbeer, dr pepper, diet, mt dew, sprite, orange soda etc. Or how many options we should even have. Suggestions? What's your favorite soda?

How many people are you having? Are you having a full bar?

Sorry, that would probably be helpful. We are expecting right around 300 people. The bar will be open from about 5-midnight. We will have beer, wine, and a few liquors for mixed drinks, but not necessarily a full bar (I'm not entirely sure what MIL has bought or plans to buy)

Honestly, coming from a former bartender and restaurant manager, 2 liters are a pain in the ass to pour from and handle. I would seriously consider cans...the bartender can pour it into a glass for the guests if they are just drinking soda. And you can get usually 2-3 drinks worth of soda mixer from each can.

If you all are buying the soda, remember you can always return it. I wouldn't stress too much about that. I feel like you have a lot of options. Maybe keep it at four to choose from. I think coke, rootbeer, sprite, and orange soda or dr. Pepper. I don't drink soda, but when I used to it was either rootbeer or dr. Pepper.

I'm not sure how many you would need, but I wouldn't try to stock every flavor of soda available. The more different flavors you have, the more you have to buy of each and the more left over you'll have. Stick to the classics....coke, sprite/or ginger-ale, dr pepper, and a diet option (diet coke's probably the best option).

I would vote for cans as well.

I say Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite and club soda/tonic water cover the major bases. Everything else is just a nice surprise.

We usually prefer cans. It is easier for the staff and can limit waste. I would stick to basics. 6 cases of Coke, 6 case of Diet Coke, 6 cases Ginger Ale, 3 cases Sprite, tonic and club soda (a case each if you can buy cases). Don't forget bottled water. I would get 6 cases of water. You can get other flavors if you want, but we find most people stick to the main ones anyway.

I agree with Crystal S. I would just do coke, diet coke, ginger ale, & sprite as far as soda goes. Then of course water. If you're doing bottles, I think 100 bottles is fine. People will probably only have a cup of soda during dinner

I would also suggest cans. Coke, Diet Coke and either Sprite or ginger ale. You don't need Dr. Pepper and all the others you mentioned.
