Types of food for a cake and punch reception?

Seale, on September 14, 2016 at 6:14 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 19

So, FH and I have decided to do a cake and punch reception for our wedding but we also plan to have pie and coffee/hot chocolate. My issue is there being too many sweet options. I feel like I should balance it out with something salty for people who don't have as big of a sweet tooth as myself. I found a caterer that has a fairly good selection of appetizers but wasn't sure if this would be proper or pushing into 'meal reception' territory?

I think apps would be fine - as long as it's an apps time period and not dinner time.

I think you'd be safe with some small finger foods.

A fruit cheese or veggie tray/display is always safe

@T-Rex the ceremony/reception will be around 2 or 2:30 and end before dinner time. I made sure I wasn't trespassing onto dinner time!

I found this and thought about doing it but wasn't sure if it's a little too much?

Find out how it's served also. Is the pasta salad in a little cup so guests can walk around or will you need tables and chairs

Or this one. I actually prefer this one but FH prefers the other one.

I like the 2nd one for that time ceremony but I don't think you can go wrong either way

@Jessica I plan to have some sort of seating area for guests set up. I thought about using a couple of tables due to older guests, and a six year old and three year who will definitely need a table to eat at.

Both of those sound delicious it just depends on what you are going for. The first one seems like it will be more filling. The second one seems very light as it says.

They both sound great! Since you're doing this in the afternoon, the second one may be more appropriate for the occasion.

The first one sounds really good, either would be great but I'd want open 1.

FH prefers the first one which surprised me seeing as he loves pretty much any kind of vinaigrette dressing but I prefer the second one. I'm considering letting him have it since he hasn't asked for too much for the wedding.

I second doing finger sandwiches and small apps. I would see if you could combine op 1 and op 2 - like, the meatballs, the cucumber sandwiches, and the strawberry salad for example. What time is the reception going to be held?

If he have our reception at 2 then it'll be no later than 2:30 or 3 pm. FH and I are doing a first look and I'm hoping to get all of our pictures done before the ceremony begins so that we have time with our guests.
