Turn sand white? Impossible?

jenifer, on May 28, 2016 at 1:45 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 20

I wasn't planning on using sand in my centerpieces but now I think I need to do something to add weight to the jars. I thought sand would be a cheap way of doing it. I want white sand, and that is not cheap. Play sand, is cheap, but not white. I have googled and googled and cant find a way to turn it white. Is this impossible or do you know how to do it?

Using jars with fake flowers, any other idea on how to add weight to them that is classy and pretty? (not water)

That would be ideal! But if a bag of white sand isnt in the budget, not sure I can get to Punta Cana... Good thinking though lol

Try looking for craft sand. You know the REALLY fine sand that comes in rainbow colors? I would assume that it comes in white too since it comes in all other hues. Maybe at Michaels?

Pretty sure you can't "bleach" sand. What if you used regular sand, then wrapped the bottom of the jars with ribbon.

@km90 is thinking outside the box! That's a good suggestion too.

And while we are at it, sugar! Sugar is finer than salt and may better resemble sand.

Sand is made up of finely ground rocks. White sand is typically very fine silica, which is a type of rock. Try looking for pool sand, but wear a respirator when pouring it because it is extremely fine and can mess with your lungs if it becomes airborne.

I've used it for my carnivorous plants' soil, and it works great. You can usually get it reasonably cheap, like a 50lb bag for $15-$20 max.

ETA: pool sand comes in different grits too, so look for a more coarse grit to avoid the dust problem.

Are you having a beach-theme? Otherwise, I would not use sand, I would use those glass beads/marbles.

Pea gravel, river rocks -- if you're not doing a beach theme.

Not sand but I've heard of people using Epsom salts! They said it adds a little sparkle and crystal.

I'd use river rocks or those glass beads/marbles, not sand. Sand really only makes sense with a beach theme. Epsom salts would be pretty also.

Lowe's carries big bags of white play sand for cheap, if that's what you really want. I use it in my son's sand box.

Otherwise, Michael's should carry tiny amounts of white sand, along with various other colors.

Try the Dollar Tree, if there are any near you. I bought white sand there a couple of weeks ago.

Lots of great ideas. I am going to try salt and see how that looks.

Its not a beach theme but it is outdoors on the inlet of the ocean. Theme is southern/inlet charm. Lots of lace and simplicity with a some charm.

Cant do sugar because of bugs and I am trying to get them done early so I dont have to worry about it. And that is why I dont want to use water. Also the sand helps hold the stems in place where as water does not.

Thanks ladies! Salt looks great. I found a 25lb bag of table salt at Sam's for $5. They also have pool salt. Does anyone know what pool salt looks like compared to table salt?

This is a center piece just thrown together. The real ones will look better. Just wanted to share

Nice job, that looks good! A pp suggested epsom salt, that might be a good option as well.
