Tulle- How much to get to decorate your reception?

Hayley, on March 18, 2013 at 11:28 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 8

Every post I see on here has not helped me understand the jargon of fabric buying. I am hoping to get some tulle to decorate my 3 tents for my garden wedding. I don't have a specific plan in mind but I will be draping it a bit from the ceiling and using it to disguise parts of the legs of the tents that aren't as pretty. Can someone just give me a base amount of how much tulle they had at their wedding and I will order that? I am not afraid of ordering too much, just too little. I attached a photo that shows one of the tents I will be using. They do not have it draped like I want, but it gives you an idea of the space I will have to fill. I am having 3 tents. Thank you!

I'm using tulle & twinkle lights. Here's what you need to do: first figure out how you actually want to decorate. You need a plan, will the tulle be hanging across the ceiling? On the walls?

Once you know how you want to do it, you need to take measurements. For my venue I'm doing a zigzag, so I took measurements from each spot I'm using. I found out through various sites, you want to add 20% extra tulle to that measurement, for draping, since tulle isnt attractive in a straight line, you want "swag" to it. Also, if you're covering the tent legs, measure those too, add that to the total. Measure & add 20% to anything you want covered, it's better to have too much tulle than to not have enough.

That's pretty much it. If you're using a few different tulles, you just use the same measurements for that. But you wont know exactly how much to buy until you figure out how you want to decorate.

At LEAST 60 yards. You can usually buy it by the bolt online and at fabric stores.

Edit* Oh, you have 3 tents? 120, at least then.

Thank you Jamie for just saying an amount. I am not going to measure the tents. I am not that anal about coverage. I will be ordering it asap, thanks for the advice.

I would order 3 bolts if they are 50 yard bolts. Of course you want wider tulle 48-52 inch so it looks fuller. You can get it as little as 6 inches wide and that covers nothing.

60 yards may not be anywhere close to what you need for 3 tents. It seriously depends on how big those tents are and what exactly you will do with the tulle.
