Tree for Ceremony

Legacy, on May 6, 2013 at 4:26 PM Posted in Planning 1 15

Did anyone use a tree for their ceremony in lieu of unity candles? If so, what kind did you use? My coordinator is recommending a crate myrtle which I love but it's over our budget.

Any florists or nursery vendors have recommendations?

Like a tree that you plant together during the ceremony? Haven't personally done, or seen it- but it sounds like a lovely idea!

Yes, we will water it as a "unity tree" then plant it in our yard.

Here is a script I found online the other day!

    Tree Planting Ceremony.

Celebrant: Sarah and John will now take part in a Tree Planting Ceremony, to symbolize the roots of their relationship, and the continued growth of their love, as they become each other's family today.

Love is the essence of human experience and emotion. It is the root of all and everything we, as humans, do. Love richens our experience, and fills our lives with meaning. It gives us a firm base from which to grow, to learn, and change.

Sarah and John, would you please plant the sapling?

Celebrant: Let your relationship and your love for each other be like this tree you plant today. Let it grow tall and strong. Let it stand tall during the harsh winds and rains and storms, and come through unscathed. Like a tree, your marriage must be resilient. It must weather the challenges of daily life and the passage of time. And just like the tree you are planting, marriage requires constant nurturing and nourishment.

Sarah and John, would you please water the sapling?

Celebrant: Remember to nourish each other, with words of encouragement, trust, and love. This is needed on a daily basis so you each can grow and reach your fullest potential - just like this tree.

Where do you live? What grows best in your area? Do you want something that flowers? Bears fruit? Evergreen?

We are doing a tree ceremony as well. In ours, we are taking soil from my parents house, soil from my FIL house, and soil from our home, and pouring it in the pot. We are going to be getting a maple sapling.

@J&B...D.C. not sure what grows best. Any of those options are ok. Something not requiring a lot of maintenance. I do not have a green thumb!

How about an Oak or Maple? They are hardy.

We are doing a tree ceremony as well! We are using a kousa dogwood tree, only cost me thirty bucks at my local nursery, and it is gorgeous when it blooms!

I'm doing a tree ceremony. We're going to use potted ficus since we don't have a permanent place to plant it. We're going to get 2 trees and braid them together the week before. Then we will replant them in a nice pot during the ceremony.

I recommend only watering the tree, not planting it -- don't want to get your hands dirty.

Mrs. Pitcher, ficus are pretty finicky and will drop leaves when stressed. You may be better off getting one that is already braided and leafy again.

I didn't think about that. Do you think if we get it and do it now it would be ok by the time of the wedding? I really wanted to braid them ourselves.

If it drops its leaves, I don't think it will recuperate and be fully re-leafed by your wedding date.

If you buy one that has been outside, keep it outside. If it has been inside, keep it inside. Just changing the amount of light it gets can stress it enough to make it "go bald."

Yes, this is the voice of experience speaking (I don't have a green thumb). Tried having a ficus in my apartment years ago.

At my former office, we had ficus trees in the courtyard. The store downstairs had a fire and the smoke came up into our courtyard. The ficus trees all dropped their leaves.
