Travel/Honeymoon Insurance

Karla, on December 2, 2013 at 7:37 PM Posted in Honeymoon 0 21

We have put our deposit down on our honeymoon for 10 days at Sandals in St. Lucia May 2014. Our booking agent recommended travel insurance...so I am looking for some advice. What company to go with? Whether it's truly worth the extra $300-$400? What kind of coverage I would need?

I have always bought mine through the airlines - but it was for air travel and things associated with that (lost luggage, needing a hotel if a flight was missed, etc). For me it was worth it because you just never know.

Do you have an American Express or Visa card? If so, check with them - they offer travel insurance.

Good to know, I have both cards. I will call them tomorrow and see what their coverage is like.

I would never travel without insurance.

We get ours though the bank

So do check out Visa and things Also depending on where you get other insurance from the same companies may cover you for travel.

I've never bought travel insurance until this honeymoon planning. We booked our flights and had to put deposits down on rooms to lock in certain prices. I was hesitant but it sounded worth the extra 200 dollars to us. We got coverage for $5000 and it covers if we get sick and can't go, if an immediate family member becomes ill and we can't travel, missing connections, major weather events, etc.

I've only ever bought through expedia. I think it was like $25 per person. It covered making a change once for any reason. I actually used it one time. I think 300-400 is a little ridiculous.

It's that high I guess because we are going for 10 days and our honeymoon is pretty expensive being that it's all inclusive, it covers us each for up to $5000 for lost luggage, trip interuption, cancellation, etc. I checked out insuremytrip.com and the quotes were quite high there too. I'm gonna look into it more and call Amex tomorrow to see what they offer. Thanks for all the advice ladies!

We always use insuremytrip.com. We are also USAA members and have had good luck with them.

I used insuremytrip as well for our HM and spent about 3-something. Trip was 8k+ so it seemed like a good deal since it covered pretty much anything that could happen.

The biggest difference in many policy's is due they cover pre existing conditions. So if you had the condition in the last 60 days you won't be covered. Some have it and some don't. They all offer different coverage as well. Some cover cancel for any reason and some don't.

I tell everyone over $2000 to get it. I wish everyone would read the brochures we send out. You have to understand insurance or it won't work when you have an issue.

Travel insurance is a bad financial decision (if they paid out more than they took in, they'd be out of business very quickly). HOWEVER, if you're really splurging and the honeymoon is heavily pre-paid, you might consider it for this one trip since it's a life event... If you're on flexible rates, then I wouldn't do it. What are the chances you have to cancel the trip 24 hours (most hotel cancellation policies) before leaving? Not very high... With the airlines, you'll have the full value of your ticket minus a change fee ($100-200 depending on airline) valid for a full year from the date of ticketing.

Over the years, though, you shouldn't buy it for all travel. You'll end up paying a lot more in insurance than cancellation/change fees the few times you do need to change things.

Tip: With hotels, there's almost always a flexible rate (AAA, Credit Union, Amex, etc) which is as low or almost as low as the pre-paid rate.

$400 seems a little pricey. Is that for both of you? We are getting married in Cancun next month and are flying out of Denver. Since the weather can be bad during this season we went ahead and bought the insurance. If for some reason we get a blizzard and can't fly, we at least get a full refund. We are spending way too much money for it to go down the drain God forbids something happened. So my advice would be to purchase the insurance.

Thanks ladies, I'm gonna keep shopping around because it's very unlikely we are going to cancel our honeymoon!! So at the bare minimum I would just be worried about one of us getting sick/injured while we are in St. Lucia and having to fork out money for that.

@Samantha, we are staying at Sandals La Toc in St. Lucia, one of the honeymoon suites with a private pool Smiley winking

If you don't purchase insurance, and you're unable to travel for any reason, you stand to lose 100% of what you paid.

A couple of weeks ago we had a bride in her 20's who suffered from a seizure on the plane on her way to Mexico. She was young and healthy, and had never experienced a seizure before. We process at least 4 or 5 claims a year. Failing to purchase trip insurance could be financially devastating! I would never recommend traveling without it.

There are a lot of variations in policies and coverages. I would work with an experienced travel professional who understands all the ins and outs of the policy. They will be able to help you identify what you do need, without selling you more insurance than what makes sense for your trip.

Saying insurance is a bad financial decision is foolish advice. If you ever saw how much it costs to get medical evacuation out of another country to the US to get to a hospital, you'd crap your pants. Ill be damned if I was going to stay in Africa if I got hurt there and my insurance would have paid up to 100k to get me out. The likelihood that something bad would happen is low, but after seeing my boss' husband break his back coming off a SeaDoo in MX and spend a day trying to figure out transport... I wouldn't take the chance.
