Top Heavy Brides....

Soon2beMrsLittle, on February 20, 2014 at 2:40 PM Posted in Planning 0 25

Im top heavy and now I have black marks on my shoulders from my bra straps. What can I do to hide this on my wedding day? Does anyone else have this problem?

I'm not top heavy, but I think someone posted about this topic before and recommended not wearing a bra or just wearing a strapless bra until you put your dress on. Is your dress strapless?

I know what you mean @ Soon2be.My bra fits too but I think it's the weight of your breasts and the straps rubbing on your skin. I have them (40dd) but they are really light. But I had straps added unto my dress so they wont be seen

Maybe you can have your hair down on your wedding to hide the marks , if you are insecure about it?

You bra doesn't fit properly. As a woman wearing a 32P bra, I don't have that issue and haven't since I stopped wearing the wrong size, unsupportive bra. I'm on mobile, but I'll post the link to how to properly measure yourself. Most stores do it wrong.

Mollishism, thanks but again my bras are custom made BECAUSE IM TOP HEAVY, so they def fit I've been fitted more than once to be sure I dont know what your race is but it might just be people of darker skin tones ( just a thought, not to offend anyone) but Yes angel, my dress is strapless and i'm becoming nervous about it. i've thought about wearing my hair down so that might be my best and only option because straps with my dress will not look right unfortunately

ETA: Sorry just saw your reply about them being custom made. Please ignore first two paragraphs.

Similarly to what others are saying, I don't believe your bra is the correct fit. This is normal for most women and especially for us top heavy women as many stores don't carry our size. What many stores do is measure you and use "sister sizes" to get you into a size they do have. Once you go up in band width the cup size goes down. So if you are a 32 DDD they put you in a 34 DD. The fit is generally not nearly as great and once put in the correct size the difference is felt. The Victoria Secret in my area is notorious for doing this.

The reason I bring this up to you is because your straps shouldn't be leaving marks even if you are very top heavy. The band and the straps should share the weight, but the band helps out a lot. Perhaps you know all of this and I'm telling you everything you have heard before, but wanted to throw it out there.

Personally as a FF, I will be getting a corset thing so that I don't have to deal with a strapless bra. A friend of mine had this corset/bustier that wasn't tight it was like a strapless bra but had boning down to her waist so that there was a ton of support and no slippage.

I'm an H cup and don't have any marks, so I would check into that. But to ACTUALLY answer your question, try make up if you don't want them to show. I've heard great things about this stuff.

I'd try makeup or wearing your hair down. It sounds like you have skin discoloration from your bra straps. I think this can happen to women of any color, but it may show up more on darker skin. I would try using a daily exfoliator and fade cream on the discolored area. One of the products I know of is called Murad Rapid Age Spot and Pigment Lightening Serum. If over the counter stuff isn't working, you could also see a dermatologist to get a better recommendation.

I'm top heavy and do not have marks. Custom made doesn't mean they are a perfect fit. A perfect-fitting bra should leave your straps not digging into your shoulders, no matter the weight, because the rib-cage measurement is the right size to support them *almost* without straps (but not quite).

I would get a second opinion on your custom measurements and bras.

To answer your question, have a seamstress sew in straps.

It sounds like they're not bruises (that would be caused by the straps digging in), but the hyperpigmentation/discoloration can happen if the straps are constantly rubbing on your shoulders. Perhaps they're too loose or you need wider straps (yes, I saw that your bras are custom).\

You can read about this here:

This is the best picture I have right now. I know she bought it at David's Bridal a year or so ago. The back was fairly simple, just hook and eyes to close it. She said it was super comfy and sometimes wears it in the summer with other strapless tops/dresses.

ETA: found the product on the website. it doesn't go up to a very large size, but here is the link for a better picture. http://www.davidsbridal.com/Product_New-Bustier-with-Smooth-Thin-Bodice-8704_Accessories-Lingerie-All-Lingerie-Bras

@Soon2beMrsLittle: Wow, what a response! Incidentally, for future reference, telling someone something isn't meant to be offensive, typically means it is.

ANYWAY, it very well COULD be hyperpigmentation, HOWEVER if a bra fits properly, regardless of race, it should not dig in at the straps, nor should there even be enough weight on the straps to rub or cause hyperpigmentation, solely because 90% of the support should be coming from the BAND. I have been "top heavy" all my life, and most lingerie stores, including the local "custom" one, all measure improperly, and were trying to cram me into a 40-42DDD bra, because those are a size they stock. I *actually* wear a size 32P (US)/ 32K (UK) bra. Believe me when I say until I found a *properly* fitting bra, I constantly had issues with rubbing straps, and straps that sank in.

So yes, it is possible and even likely that your lingerie place doesn't measure properly, because the proper way to measure for a bra seems to have become a lost art. You'd also be surprised how large of bras you can find by doing a simple Google or Amazon search. I managed to find pretty, *properly sized* bras on Amazon on sale for like $20/each, which for me was amazing.

Believe it or not, some of us on here actually do know what we're talking about, and we're not all idiots. Please stop acting like we are. Chances are, if we're telling you that something might not be right with your bra based on the questions you asked, there's a good chance we've been through it ourselves and found the actual answer.

Here's that link, if you want to bother to read it. It explains everything that I just said.

@Della @Soon2beMrsLittle That type of bra from David's Bridal doesn't go to bigger sizes. I believe that one only went to a 42DD. There's another bra that they have the consultants hand out that they say is made more for plus sized brides, but that also just goes up to 44DD.

    I believe this is it:
