Too much of a variety of alcohol?

Keely, on October 19, 2020 at 6:54 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 13
Hey y’all! My wedding is October 2021, I’m starting to try to figure out the alcohol situation. I am wanting to do an open bar but I am stuck on what to serve. I know for sure I am doing a frozen margarita machine. I also wanted to do two signature drinks, 2 or 3 different beers and maybe two different wines? Is that too much of a variety? Would anyone even drink the wine? Should I just get rid of the wine and go with everything else? Lol.

You can never have too many options in my opinion!

Some people love beer or wine and others won't touch it even if it's the only option. Ask your closest family/friends what they like to drink of your choices. At the very least have one beer and one wine choice.

If anything I’d get rid of the signature drinks as you already have a cocktail.

I would keep the classic wine for a dinner drink, but that’s just me! 🍷

I don't think that's too much! We had an open bar and we offered 4 types of beer, 4 types of wine, 2 types of champagne, and 5 premium liquors so the bartenders were able to make pretty much any kind of cocktail guests wanted. We didn't do any signature drinks though. In my opinion, the more variety the better (if it's in your budget!) I always drink wine at weddings, even in full open bar situations

I think that's good. People like a variety, since not everyone will like the same thing

If you have the frozen margarita machine, I would take away the signature drinks option. You could always have a sign that says what frozen margarita is your SO fav, and which is yours. That way you get the frozen marg. machine AND a sig. drink section.

Guests love options too though, so a variety is fine. If it's a matter of budget and if you're worried about spending too much on alcohol that won't be consumed, then omit the sig. drinks.

I do not think that is too many options. At the last wedding I attended they had 7 liquor options, 4 beers, and 4 wines. Most people started with liquor and switched to beer or wine by the end of the night.

    That’s what I would think!

It’s a know-your-crowd thing but 2-3 types of beer, and 2 types of wine (1 red like a Cabernet and 1 white like a Chardonnay) is usually a good mix.

I think that is great! I hate going to parties or weddings and there isn't anything I like.

No such thing as "too much variety" when it comes to alcohol. Like others said it's a know your crowd thing. Our venue provides the alcohol so we will have a full bar but if I was providing the alcohol ourselves we would do one red wine, one white, 3-4 different types of beer (1-2 lighter ones, 1-2 "regular" ones, and a seasonal one), and the standard liquors: light and dark rum, vodka, tequila, gin, whiskey/ bourbon (I'm definitely missing some but I have a meeting in 4 minutes haha). Then I'd get all the mixers to have with them... coke, club soda, juice, etc.

Now I get what people are saying about no need for signature drinks if you're having the marg machine BUT if you don't want to provide a full bar but still want some liquor options, having a few signature drinks is a good compromise, just make sure they have different kinds of liquor and not tequila - a mojito (rum) and moscow mule (vodka) for example.

So I sell alcohol for a living and prior to that I worked in hotels for a few years so I get this question a LOT from my friends.

As it has been said above, know your crowd and what they drink, this will help with making the decision. Usually a chardonnay and a nice red (pinot noir or a blend work well) for wines. Some people are not a fan of a true cabernet but they will drink a red blend.

For beer be mindful of your IPAs as there is a WIDE range from those that are slightly hoppy to those that are like your licking a pinecone. It is a good idea to have an IPA, Pilsner, Lager and Domestic. There are some craft breweries that do a lager that are a great option to have instead of having the lager and a domestic (MIller Lite, Coors Light, etc.).

Keep in mind something Gluten Free for those that are either GF for allergy or preference, something like a hard seltzer or a cider is a great pick for that.

For cocktails, a "his, hers and ours" is a great way to go but try to vary what you are serving, you can also find some great batch recipes for Moscow Mules and an Old Fashioned. Offer different spirits so that for those that do not like tequila have an option.

For sparkling wine/champagne you will need to figure out if you want to have it only for the toast or as an option for the entire evening. If its only for the toast and only a half glass then each 750mL bottle will give you about 8-12 glasses.

I definitely wouldn't 86 the wine. What you're offering is almost exactly what we had. We had two signature cocktails, two varieties of wine (a white and a red), and two varieties of beer. A lot of people drank cocktails and switched to wine and beer during dinner. But, it was a popular choice.
